Arizona Chickens

Got a text from Bonnie (LadyKotadoria). She asked me to post for you all as she doesn't have internet available at the moment. She "found raw milk here in the Ozarks. It is $3.50 a gallon. 1/2 Jersey, the balance Holstein and a Mixed Cow breed." She has pics but can't post. She stated "the green I(she) posted earlier is called pok"

I wonder if the green "pok" is pokeweed. If so, I hope she is not eating it raw. It is full of toxins and must be cooked and prepared correctly. I can't find your original post to look at the plant.

City Farm: I've noticed that the SLW and Barred Rock chicks are growing really fast, I don't know why, since are getting the same food and environment as the others. For what it's worth, they were all supposed to be large fowl.

Timiskins: I've got Barred Rock, Silver Laced Wyandotte and Buff Orphingtons. I got them from Meyer Hatchery, who I've always had good luck with- I've never gotten a sickly or unproductive bird from them, and for hatchery stock they are good quality. They were all supposed to be girls, and so far none of them look rooish.
Sent you a pm.

Of the three hens I have left, I found the white leghorn and the barred rock are more heat tolerant than the East Egger. Most of time during the day, I can see the Leghorn and Barred Rock were acting normal while EE was gasping for air. Also, EE Lay smaller and less egg than Leghorn and BPR. I am so amazed by the size and quantity of the eggs laid by Leghorn especially that Leghorn has a very small frame.

What kind of toxins? Environment or naturally occurring ??

Leghorns are known for their egg laying abilities. They are considered an "egg laying" breed, for eggs only, versus a "dual purpose" breed, for eggs plus meat. They also tend to burn out early, so I'm told (don't keep them myself so no personal experience)--quit or drastically reduced laying by 18 months of age.

The Tucson Organic Feed Co-op should be putting together an order in a couple of weeks, for delivery in early August. I can forward you the email when it arrives. The Tucson pickup location is near Wetmore/La Cholla. Their feed runs $25-30 per 50 lb bag, depending on what you are getting. They also have feed for other types of livestock. And human-grade bulk flour and whole grains.

My birds prefer the Modesto feed but I can't afford it retail and don't use enough to warrant buying by the pallet. The organic feed at my local feed store is priced at a similar price per bag as the organic feed co-op, but the feed store bags are only 40 lbs. instead of 50 lbs from the co-op, so the feed store feed is way more expensive.

Wondering how much longer I can afford to feed non-GMO.

ok I will look into it, please send me the email.

Maybe you and carnivore can get together for a Modesto order? I'd love to be able to split Modesto orders if it wasn't such a PITA to have it delivered here. Some of the drivers get in and out fast, they know how to turn around in the tight space. Others get all stressed out over it. I like to get other people on board with organic and away from the GMO feed. Maybe if people wanted to split, and could come here when it is delivered and help me move and stack my portion in exchange for getting a better price?? I have picked up 100 bags and moved one at a time into my building--whew that is a lot of weight moved.

I might be interested if you order Carnivore. let us know what we are looking at
Inquiring minds want to know more.. Anyone have guinea here? There must be a thread devoted to them..

we had them running with our birds when we were growing up. they are great to notify you of intruders but neighbors might not appreciate their loud "buckwheat" sound. They would kill snakes and other bugs. would be really cool to watch them team up against dogs and snakes.

Is your EE a banty size? Mine lay medium sized eggs. My AM lay a bit larger and i mean a very lil bit larger egg than my EE. my NN lay my largest sized eggs

there is a lot of thread to read since I have been gone. We have also been getting rain here. It comes in sheets and then nothing typical monsoon style. I love love love the rain but my joints do not.
We have decided to move and we are looking for more property 5 acres or more in Marana or SW Tucson. I have lived in my house for 10 years so its gonna be a pain to move but we have no options.

so we are now up to 8 goats (I took 3 in for a very sick lady that cannot care for them currently) and 7 Muscovy ducklings and 2 splay legged peacocks.......yeah cuz I need more animals lol. :) I really do love it. moving all these animals should be great fun.

I have 3 drakes if anyone wants 4-6 mo old male ducks. 1 white crested and 2 crested mixes. I don't want to eat them but will if they do not sell. 7 drakes is way to many. only $10- if you want them.

I was asked if I am willing to have school's come out to my farm , maybe when I get moved but im not sure. I am working on getting a mini cow and she comes with a mini horse lol.

so if all goes well we will have chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, goats, pot bellied pigs (they are ready to be picked up), feeder pigs a mini cow and a mini horse. I guess it would be like a petting zoo for school kids huh?

I was thinking of hosting a chicken pen raising at my new house (Amish style). wonder if anyone would come?
