Arizona Chickens

@alittlechicken about the sheet metal. I just got rid of like 5 sheets. They were scrap. I bet your hubby could find some for y'all. These were scrap pieces with a little drywall and glue still on them but would've worked fine for you. Just put the ugly side on the bottom or grind it off with a wheel.

Good morning everyone. I hope nobody has damage from the group here. Looking at all the uprooted trees on the news. We didn't get the bad stuff. Just a little wind and a little rain west of Downtown Phoenix.
The good news is that we didn't lose any trees or chickens! We woke up at about 10:30 and it sounded like we were in a war zone and had just been bombed! The whole house shook. We think that the lightening got a little too close, and our electricity is all jacked up this morning. So far, we know that at least 3 GFIs fried, taking out my computer's battery back-up, half the outlets in the kitchen (had to carry the coffee maker around the kitchen until I found a wall where the outlets still worked), and the outlets in the guest apartment (including a freezer full of meat which had to be relocated to the other freezers). Of course, my DH (an industrial electrician) had to be at work in Phoenix at 5:00 AM, so that left me to try to isolate all the problem areas so he can fix it all when he gets home!! We are thankful that it wasn't any worse and there was no permanent damage, just a little inconvenience!

We have a volunteer mulberry, never harvested for seeds.. Although we eat the fruits.. It decided to pick a spot up against our wall. It will have to go soon.. If it produces fruit I will save you some..
I would greatly appreciate some. I am so excited to get new plants and design the new property. we found one we like. My husband is putting in for hos VA Loan so God willing we have found a house. All four of us love it so that is saying A LOT!! first one the boys , hubby and I all agree on.

It hit Toxin a bit earlier. I was sitting out in the run just as the rain started, Jenny had just jumped in my lap when the first thunderboomer went off. She went flying and squawking, the other chickens were running around like...well, you know.
Most of my run is covered with tarps, but one area over a lantana just has shade cloth. The rain started pretty heavy, tarps worked as advertised, the run stayed high and dry. Even the shade cloth area let very little rain through, most just ran off. After a few minutes, the chickens gathered under the lantana, they like taking their water off the leaves (when they're not busy trying to EAT the leaves!).

Looks like Red Durocs - an old breed that you don't hardly see any more but they are prolific layers and their eggs are usually a really dark red like these.
I cannot find this breed. curious because we raised pigs like this.

we have searched and searched for sheet metal scrap. you get any more let me know and we will buy it at scrap from you. we cannot find anything good here. also we need fencing so if anyone finds free or cheap fencing, plywood and or 2x4's I would love some help. I will travel to get them just not every week lol.

I will have to have a thank you party for my friends as a thank you for helping me find stuff I need for this move. we currently have 3 coops and I know I will need 10 to separate everyone. we will have some free range but most my breeds and varieties of breeds will be cooped.

Almost lost one this weekend.

Yesterday around 11am I went to check my capon coop and found one of my black ameraucana roos was "dead". His laid on side motionless, eyes closed and not respond when I use a stick to poke him. So I took him out ready to discard the body when I found that he is still soft and warm and his eyes half opened. I didn't find any wound or bite marks, the only reason for his condition that I may thought of was that his brothers may have piled on him and suffocated him? By the way, they are about 3 months old.

I took him inside, set him in a box and used a turkey baster to drip some salt water into his mouth. After some 30 minutes to an hours he seems to gain some strength now eyes are open still couldn't get up. I can here him "cough" like trying to get something out of his throat, I felt his crop it is empty and weirdly mushy however I couldn't massage anything out of his mouth while hold him upside down. I gave him more water just let him rest.

By night around 6pm his seems better I took him out set him on the lawn, he could walk! but he limps, especially the left leg, may it went to sleep for too long when he was in coma? He walked a bit and they sit down to take a rest, he drank some water I set aside.

I took him in by 8pm and let him spend the night inside in the box. This morning at 6am seems he is fully recovered! I put him back to the pen he walks, eats, drinks normal!

Excited that he recovered still not sure what happened to him.

We planted two Mulberry trees too, the fruit is a favorite of mine and I hear that chickens love them!

We wanted the Cottonwoods for shade in the front yard, and they grow pretty fast. Shade is very important around here. Lol!

We also have tons of naturally growing Juniper, Ash, Hackberry, Cedar, Mesquite, Sycamore and others that I'm not very familiar with.
I hope you specifically bought FRUITING mulberries if you want fruit. Mulberries come male and female plants and only the females produce fruit. The male mulberries are generally sold in nurseries, because people don't want the mess from the fruit, but not in Tucson, they were banned here because of allergy problems from the male pollen. You don't need a male tree to have fruit from your female tree.

Is it a capon? How long ago was the surgery, and what was the temperature like when this happened? I would give electrolytes instead of salt water. Wish you luck.

Yes he is a capon, the surgery was done 3 weeks ago, all of them have healed well. It was pretty hot at the time don't remember know exact temp but it was not the worst day, they have been through warmer days and time.
