Arizona Chickens

Today has been one of the worse days I have had in a long time. A dog we took in that was abandoned at my kids school last year around Christmas time. she had been shot in her front leg with a pellet gun and had been hit by a car along with being severely emaciated. we have worked on food aggression issues and her fighting with my sons dog. we got her cleaned up, healed and healthy and my oldest son Christian loved this dog. she would even play ball and tackle football with him. A while back we brought home 3 birds from a feed store, stuck them into a crate and we had to go somewhere when we got home the 3 chickens had been killed. we caught her in the area and we worked on rehabilitating her. it seemed it worked, no more issues. Then last night I get some new chickens and put them out in the duck run so that they can all be treated this weekend (a just in case I do with adult birds) and this am 2 of the roosters were fighting. we threw one in a kennel as I had to take my DH and the boys to work and school. 

I get home and the neighbor ran over and said we have a serious issue, your dog got into the garden then into the duck run and started killing chickens, she also ran chickens out so you have some dead in your yard too. then she goes on to say she saw the whole thing and tried to throw rocks to stop it.

it was obvious it just happened. I found 2 cuckoo Marans, 1 Delaware, and 1 BCM along with Rufus my Blue wheaten AM rooster dead in the run. well Rufus was not dead yet he died in my arms (he was one of my favorite roosters) then I found the 6 EE and an Ancona and another cuckoo Marans dead in my yard. none were eaten, no blood just killed. The neighbors said even though I had 5 big dogs in my yard only Noel was killing the chickens the others were barking at her. 

we took Noel to the pound and thankfully there was a rescue there pulling dogs and they are willing to take her in. My son has been crying since I picked him up and frankly so have I. to lose 13 birds and my dog all in one swoop I just don't even know what to do. 

Oh man. I feel so bad for you. I'm sorry you had such a problem.

What a terrible situation to come home to. Sending hugs your way. Emoticons won't work for me right now. Dogs and chickens can be so tricky. My normally very docile old collie/shepherd mix got very agitated and energetic when I brought home some chicks a year and half ago. Her natural instincts came out immediately. I was really shocked. There were several close calls and lots of training required. Our dog has since passed away from old age. I am glad your dog will have another chance. I am so sorry for what you and your family are going through right now.

Sorry to here about that, that really sucks. We have a a dog in our house that would do the same thing if I had not trained it to stay away from the chicks. He tried to jump into the brooder from the back of the couch, the first day they were in the brooder. We also have a shorthair pointer that could easily get into the brooding pen if he wanted. Apperently because they are not quail he wants no part of them, figure that one out.

I have not found much in the way of poultry stuff around here. You might try tractor supply or Arizona feed on Ruthrauff. Also vaquero.

Yeah, asking around I came up with both of those as possibles, will check them both tomorrow, Murray McMurray lists it in their catalog, but says they can't ship it to Arizona.

When I moved here in 04, I brought a dog with me from La. as I was still training for a living then. She was a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Suey and her favorite thing to do was go into the wash and chase coyotes. I love how beautiful dogs are. Plain hunting machines. I trained her for Personal Protection and sold her to a Real Estate agent who's house backed up to an Apartment Complex and he was finding kids in his yard and worse. Amazingly he never had another problem after the day he brought her home. She was built like a tank. We would train out at Luke AFB on their Working Dog Course and she would out perform them. Could scale a 9ft wall too. I miss that dog.

@AZChiknGoddess I had never really had chickens of my own before now and when we got them as chicks our puppy killed 3. He was great with them and very gentle the day we brought them home. I left the house thinking everything was fine and well ..that's my fault. At least I learned from it. Being a trainer I now know how I would approach training/chicken proofing now. He is very gentle and mellow around the chickens now and they even jump on his back and peck at his tail with no reaction. PM me if you ever thought about getting a bigger dog and need tips for training it.

I told my brother where I was moving (via text) and the first thing he said was "ah you'll have to find someone to split a hog and cow with you" lol. Thought that was funny.

I am so sorry for your loss! I can't imagine coming home to anything like that. So sorry!

Wow what a heartbreaking story, im so sorry for your losses. It reminded me of my lab I had growing up, she did the same thing killed all our ducks 7 of 10 geese and alot of chickens when my dad ws taking me and my brother to school. When I got home my dad told us what happened and said that he had to put Lady down, he said once a chicken killer always a chicken killer, I know now thats not always true but it is hard to break that predatir instinct once it happens.
