Arizona Chickens

Polly is being quite the beeyatch chasing the new hens around the pen, so I grabbed her and put her in isolation in a penned area under the tree where I'm hoping she will eat up the ticks. Just got an e-collar for my greyhound who has quite the prey drive.

I found another egg, too! It was white. It must be Agatha. (front left) I think she's the only breed I have that lays white eggs. Maybe the new hens will be a good influence on the pullets that haven't started laying.

Help! All out door green forest harvesters. I have scored milkweed. Problem, I'm late the pods are all over 1 1/2" long, but they haven't opened yet.

Can you still eat the larger pods? How do you fix them? Am I just out of luck? I have the smallest ones boiling. I assume you fist still need to boil them twice.

All the recipes refer to 1 1/2" pods or smaller, after reading description, history and all kinds of good info ... But not how to cook until last. Then it is vague.
Since you are able to have an abundance, try cooking them the way they are what do you have to loose ? Also please bring some dried seeds from the pods or send them in the mail ? I'll try to reach you later.

I'm heading to the Phoenix Valley and thought I'd stop at Trader Joes for some fertile eggs for my broody Black Aussie.  Do these really work?  Should I know anything - questions - dates - whatever before picking them up?   thanks for your help.

There is a thread just for trader joes fertile eggs.. Seems like it would work, if not
. You could come by for some of our barnyard mix if you would like?

I finally took off the Velcro band.. Did not work for us.. If you do get it to work, please post![/quote
I don't need it yet but I will definitely post about it. I figure I have a couple of months.

Do your neighbors say anything about it?

Yes at first they did.. We had planned on getting rid of him & possibly the duck's.. Then he brought over his kids & it was ok.. However, the girlfriend did not seem fond of the idea of chickens out & about in the front yard..

Well I stopped by TJs and got eggs - day 234 - today is 239 - Thank you so much @Beckyhsinglsc !! AND I'm slowly making my way through the thread. My broody Aussie took to the eggs like water at 100 degrees - if they hatch - grand - if they don't well my girl will feel better. Fingers and toes crossed!! Thanks again both of you - you were a great help!

I thought I'd ask here first since I think it's hydration/heat related. I noticed one of my BO hens just laying in the run when I got home around 4pm. I was just out for the past hour working in the garden when I noticed she was still there and as I approached she didn't move like normal and she didn't seem to be breathing. As I got right up to here she finally moved her head but remained laying on the ground. I went into the run and noticed her legs to one side of her and she was damp on her underside. No blood. I have her inside now and gave her some apple cider vinegar. She seems alert but will not put any weight on her legs. If I pester her enough to drink more she shuffles her body around. Any suggestions?

Poor baby. Glad you found her in time. I lost an Easter Egger this way. I tried to hydrate her, but it was too late. Give her time. Keep encouraging her to drink. Anyone know if chicken electrolytes exist?

. Are you offering water also? That vinegar is stron stuff. I am assuming it is with live mother? Dehydration is tarrable. I had a girl I thought was on her way when I started. Bringiging her inside is good. I did that along with water, but I had to bring her in again the next day. The heat was very hard on her. I think frozen watermelon was a life saver, and all the other stff. (Fan, water dishes, ice bottles, all the suggestion on keeping cool)
