Arizona Chickens

I have had a crazy day. I set 13 eggs in the hatcher and 7 chicks hatched on their own. My first pipper was glued into the shell and I had to break it off of it. There are still chunks of dried membrane on it. I hope it makes it. 1 egg pipped but has not zipped yet. 4 eggs are just sitting there, and we just began day 21. Then I made a stupid mistake and left some eggs in the incubator so two hatched on the turner! Good lesson to remember to write the set date on top. So I have 2 bonus white Silkies.

Oh Kay here is what we have..isbar, wheaten americanas from Jordans best show Birds

,bielefelders:frow

Also, two of the eggs are pippin.. they are from our same friend.

Then we got 3 eggs to put under "tiny" the other jungle fowl.. They are French bresse blue or splash from Greenfire farms.. I am going to have to look this one up. Sound so pretty.. So thankful for them

If you want to re home the  Wheaten Ameraucanas or if she has more for sell let me know. I really need a rooster

We might have a rooser in this batch, I will let you know either way..

Chicken Lady,

Thank you for all the great tips and I would never haul great lengths of boards with the tailgate up....that's just asking for trouble.  Some of my pieces, especially the 4x4x10's, will be cut in half, but would like to leave the 2x6x12-ft boards intact for my side patio deck.  I didn't ask for details, but maybe Lowes could strap the boards into manageable bundles and tote them to the back for delivery.

City Farm, thank you so much for considering the ride and putting your teenagers to work.  I'm not in a big hurry right now, because being the Interim Music Director and Primary Organist at church, I gotta solidify the music for Pastor Anniversary this month, and get music together for Church Anniversary, I think in November.   Hmmm...I currently have about 160 hrs of vacation time, and could probably take off three weeks in October.

It's not rocket science, and I'm in no big hurry.  Sorta like expecting parents getting the baby's room together.  Even if my decks and run projects are finished, then things will come to a halt to plan the next phases....building a brooder (piece of cake...wait til you see that design, ongoing feed expenses, storage bins, bedding, watering systems, First-Aid kit, what to put in all those planter boxes...save one for compost? ....and my finances to keep the whole operation going. I only want six hens max, and my space should be more than sufficient for them to run around and not get picked on.

No chickens in the plan for this year.  I want everything in place first, then I'll purchase/order my chicksm or see what's available locally.  My first choice is the Delawares, but I don't know of anyone locally who sexes them at birth.

Anyhoo, I just may go out in the finished run and roll around in the sand for abit, and get myself psyched up...LOL!. --BB

This afternoon I had an interesting thing happen. I stepped out onto the patio this afternoon and saw a long fluffy tail hanging down from the roof. I couldn't quite see the whole animal, but whatever it was, looked like it was laying on it's side. I was not being particularly quiet, so I thought it might be dead. I stood up on a stump, but still wasn't high enough to see it. So I went over to the side of the house to the storage room, walking right under it, and got my 3' long aluminum snake tongs. Went back and the animal was still there. I grabbed the tail with the tongs as far up as I could and yanked down in one smooth movement! I pulled down a very much alive FOX which hit the concrete WHUMP! and must have stunned it a bit, it snarled and spit as it staggered off into the dirt. I went into the house to get my pellet gun, but by the time I cocked it and got back outside, the fox was gone. It must have been sleeping up on the roof. It was on the roof right under where my overgrown olive trees are branching over the roof, so it was shady. I think this fox is getting WAY too comfortable here! I have been finding bits of pipe tape wrap chewed off from our solar hot water pipes onthe roof and wonder if the fox is doing that. I thought it was a packrat. I am going to try setting traps. With all the poultry here, I really do not want this fox hanging around, beautiful as it is. I was a bit up on caffeine at the time, but let me tell you, I was REALLY buzzed after pulling a fox off the roof! I do not know what possessed me to do that except I didn't know what it was and thought it might be dead, but I pulled it down quick and hard just in case. So far, I have not seen any evidence it is trying to get into the pens and we have seen this fox (I assume the same one) on several occasions over the past several weeks, although only quick glimpses through a window and then it disappears. This was actually quite funny after I thought about it a bit. I will post photos if I am successful in trapping it.

Well, a lot of people don't know this, but foxes are actually pretty good tree climbers. He might be using your olive trees for roof access.
