Arizona Chickens

Not a sussex. They are big heavy birds. Maybe a Pendesca?

Depends on the age, they start out lanky before they beef up. That one looks young. Also if the bird is from a commercial hatchery, they are usually smaller than from someone breeding for show.
Penedesenca have carnation comb and white ear lobes. That bird looks to have regular single comb and red earlobes like a Sussex.

I know right! I'm a bit excited. I hope I haven't caught that dreaded bug I've read so much about...

HELP!!!!! I have eggs coming out the ever lovin wazoo. My refrigerator is overflowing and now the counter tops are getting full. Need to give away some eggs ASAP. Getting about one dozen a day and all my hens are not laying yet. Love eggs but this is way beyond a few eggs for our consumption. Hope they slow down this winter but the BOs layed right through the winter last year. Got two new rescue horses today which means most of my time will be spent rehabilitating so less time on my chickens.

My extras that I don't sell get hard boiled, chopped up and fed back to the birds. You can also freeze them for when times are lean.

I feed extras back to my girls as well especially right now since they're molting. I also send our egg basket with my bf to work and they get snatched up in minutes. My neighbors are always happy to take a dozen too.

The comb seems really large for an immature bird. The only SS I have personally seen were show birds. So I am not well versed in hatchery bred SS.

Thanks! :) I can't wait to see what beautiful eggs the new girls lay. I am especially looking forward to any tiny silkie eggs I might get. My RIR lays a very small egg, she used to be my smallest chicken. I still need to get a scale to weigh them. I have no idea what sizes they actually lay. My RIR Phillie was the low hen in the pecking order until the new girls were moved outside. She's quite a pest to the new girls. She doesn't hurt them but keeps them in line. I think she is doing her best to keep her spot as number 4 of the 8. I have found treats are the great equalizer. It's the only time they mix up at all. It's usually Bunny, my silkie, who will run right into the group of older girls to get her share of treats where the other newbies are still timid to go in and snatch something good. My Welsummer has decided to molt her entire tail all at once as well as a a lot of her wing feathers. She has a ton of pin feathers starting. I have started giving them high protein treat mix I made up. It's a big bowl with scrambled egg, wet and dry cat food, cooked black beans, starter/grower and wild bird seed with boss. I give them a few scoops of it every other day or so to help them along with the molt. My Welly on the back left used to have a big beautiful tail like my EE on the right. Onyxia is doing her thing gradually and is losing feathers only as fast as she can grow them so she has a mix of old grungy feathers and new shiny ones. Tea has a ton of new feathers coming in at the base of her wings and neck
Mine are molting like crazy too. I had one molting so bad she could not comfortably lower her head to eat the pinfeathers were so tight! Once they pushed through the skin she felt better.
