Arizona Chickens

HELP!!!!!  I have eggs coming out the ever lovin wazoo.  My refrigerator is overflowing and now the counter tops are getting full.  Need to give away some eggs ASAP.  Getting about one dozen a day and all my hens are not laying yet.  Love eggs but this is way beyond a few eggs for our consumption.  Hope they slow down this winter but the BOs layed right through the winter last year.  Got two new rescue horses today which means most of my time will be spent rehabilitating so less time on my chickens.

I had an entire flat sitting in a shelf. Apparently one of the hens jumped up there and tumped the whole thing over. 20 hens eating broken eggs. Ugh where are you located? If you're not far I'd take some. I eat a ton.

My extras that I don't sell get hard boiled, chopped up and fed back to the birds. You can also freeze them for when times are lean.

I do this too.

I feed extras back to my girls as well especially right now since they're molting. I also send our egg basket with my bf to work and they get snatched up in minutes. My neighbors are always happy to take a dozen too.

The comb seems really large for an immature bird. The only SS I have personally seen were show birds. So I am not well versed in hatchery bred SS.

That big tubby guy looks like a speckled sussex to me.

I'm pretty sure that's what he is. The owner bought like a Rooster Mixture and he's the only SS. There are 2 Dark Brahmas, a BR, 2 NN, and the rest are RIR I think and a couple I don't know. I've got some eggs under a broody and am thinking we want a Roo to protect the flock. I'm giving this SS a try but may process and use one of the Roo's in sure I'll hatch as that's the way it goes I think. What do all think? I think they're 2 or so (Roo's). Wait and start a new ROO that's younger than his hens or this 2 year old roo? We have various breeds of hens and we're not using tem to hatch. I think i would like to choose a breed (possibly rare) and raise strictly those or 2 breeds. Until then what do you think about a protector for the flock while free ranging?

Can't wait for this processingb class so these guys can go. Clear up some space for other livestock I want.

Too bad those Brahamas are not light, I have two light Brahama hens.

:welcome     gonna love Chicken keeping

yes it reminds me of my red neck family. sometimes our stories are all we have but boy are they fun to recount

:welcome  im not a Bantam lover but Welcome

I make FF and I make a mix up for my girls and their molt has been half of what last years was. I use 2 parts grower, 1 part scratch, 1 part COBB,1 scoop BOSS and a cup or 2 of Calf Manna. they love love love it and since I ferment its all mixed together. Molt is going very well.

What is Cobb?

I've been giving eggs away to my neighbors, people at my church and my manicurist but they're coming too fast to keep up and my girls turn their noses up at scrambled or boiled eggs. They pick out the vegies, the meal worms and the grapes and leave the eggs alone.

wow, mine are the opposite. If I add other stuff to the scrambled eggs they pick the eggs out first. They'll usually eventually eat all the other stuff too but eggs are the favorite.

I'm still waiting to get my very FIRST egg. I have 3 little ladies that are now 4 months old. I'm thinking I should plan a few more chicks so I'll have a supply of eggs....

we have a family of 2, just my bf and I, and 4 chickens has been a great number of eggs. All 4 of our layers are production breeds. I do eat a lot of eggs as well as giving them to friends, I don't know what I'm going to do when my 4 new girls start laying. Luckily some of my new breeds aren't very good layers, I got them to look at. If you plan to give eggs away I recommend 2 chickens per household member. If you don't have anyone to give them to I'd say 1 per family member. If you have school age children I'm sure teachers would enjoy fresh eggs as gifts once in a while. It's pretty easy to get rid of them. I don't think anyone I've offered them to has said no.

I have 1 Brahma Hen. Pretty sure she's a Light Brahma. I'll get a pic later and we can see if it's a light or dark. I haven't seen any Roo's. She was just a feed store chick but beautiful.

That is crazy. Before all of our surplus dumped yesterday I boiled about 7 eggs and sat on the porch throwing them pieces. It's a good way for me to socialize the dogs to the chickens as well. I can't believe that a chicken wouldn't eat them. I read on other forums as well about people's flocks not eating mealworms and all kinds of stuff I never thought a chicken would turn down. They continue to amaze me at how different each one can be.

Careful. That's how they say it starts.

I bought 1 Amaricana and 2 Buff Orphitons (sorry sp) but what I GOT was 1 Easter Egger and 2 Red Sexlinks.
Have a daughter at ASU who has a boyfriend & 2 male roomates in a house, and a daughter/husband and granddaughter.
Hubby has named the girls Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner in case they don't start laying. LOL
Not worried about to many eggs, hubby and friend (and me) LOVE pickled eggs, his friends constantly beg me for them.
Yup, I think I can give away eggs.
