That's great! Where are your favorite places to fish over on the west side and up in ID? I'm an avid fly-tyer too. I taught a fly-tying class at our local fly shop for years and also sold flies through the shop.
Trade flies for flies?
I really don't breed BSFL, they pretty much do it themselves. The only thing I did that supposedly helps is to put up small rolls of corrugated cardboard near the top of the inside of the compost bins for them to lay in (not really necessary, but people online seem to think it helps--I haven't noticed any improved colonization with them). The BSF are attracted to the compost bins--just put one out and you WILL have BSF in short order. Keep in mind that unless you are a person that is very observant about insects, you'll likely never see an adult. I'm pretty observant and I rarely see them, but the compost bins have a lot of larvae. Unfortunately, I have way too much on my plate to dig through the bins to collect them for trade.
We were just talking this morning about this statement " I know right" yes you have they are wonderful aren't they.. They give us an egg a day.. Nothing like having fod from your own backyard..
Now we are waiting for farm fresh duck eggs.. Here is one on the bottom of the photo.
We got a baby duck that is suppose to lay green eggs.. Now that is eggciting!!
I'm still waiting to get my very FIRST egg. I have 3 little ladies that are now 4 months old. I'm thinking I should plan a few more chicks so I'll have a supply of eggs....
YAY ARIZONA CHICKENNNSSSSS!!! ooppps, sorry, got a little excited about finding this thread. I am in far east Mesa. I have two buff hens, one buff Roo, one white Americana(SP?) hen, one rescue Americana?? and a drake and hen Muscovy duck pair! The chickens are 22 weeks aprox and the ducks are 20 weeks aprox. I am eagerly awaiting first eggs.
I went out and "prepared" the nesting area with shavings and hay, made little nests and placed golf balls in last night. tonight I found that someone or more than one someone got up in there and kicked all the hay out, moved all the golf balls around and generally made a big ol mess. HAHAHAH
here are some pictures of my feather kids Pita and Houdini (DS8 in the background)
Houdini
BBQ the "white americana"
Nugget or Bemo (they are twins)
Fearless
Our little rescue, who i got because i was dying waiting for eggs (she doesn't lay either)
The ducks again.
Sorry to bombard with pictures, I LOVE my kids. HAHAHAHAH Now they just need to GIVE ME EGGGGGSSSSS!!!
Also, did I see that someone is having a party in October? I want in!
I love my muscovy!!!! I have 8 of them. . Looks like your white is an Easter egger's and so is your rescue. Both should give you beautiful eggs a blue to green color. OMGosh I love your BO. all your birds are very pretty!!!.
I am sooooooooo eggcited!!! I just put my first eggs into my incubator. 3 doz to start with. cross your fingers for me please. I have not incubated eggs in over 15 years. I have forgot what I am supposed to do.

our Muscovy were a surprise to us, we went to the feed store to buy mallards and ended up with these two. They are characters for sure.
Pita, Fearless and I are currently establishing that I am dominant over everyone in the flock, the boys and their hormones are very out of control at the moment!
Everyone is so pretty. I am biased of course, but I think my chickens are all very fancy. I am hoping that once the little rescue gets her feathers back in full that she will be a bit prettier. Right now she looks like a scruffy ragamuffin. I am just obsessed. I want more chickens too, but I did my raising time and now I want to buy laying hens, or close to laying and those are much harder to find! My DH literally groaned out loud last night when i told him I NEED more chickens and we might have to build a bigger coop. I think he might smother me in my sleep, he JUST finished my last bird project.

I have been told I can't have a turkey or a goat until we move to a place that has more space. I think we have plenty of space, but he wins because I need his building skills for the extra pens and he refuses.
I guess I will stick with a couple more hens if I can find any.
