I love the red tinge colored eggs. I am weird though. The Black Copper I have lay darker than my Blue Coppers. The Blues lay what I would call a medium dark egg, much darker than say a Rhode Island Red or Plymouth Rock but not as dark as the Black Coppers. I would say the vast majority of Marans in the this country lay more like a milk chocolate egg with a reddish tinge. Truly dark chocolate colored eggs are very rare.

I've known for years by the way my tummy reacts to bread, etc. that I should be gluten free but I was dragging my feet because it seemed so daunting. I've found that it's not so bad, really. I feel a lot better so it's definitely worth it for me. My daughter did it with me and her face cleared up! (teenager)

Maybe next time you have some sexed young ones I can get some from you. I would love to have some dark chocolate eggs but right now my grow-out/isolation coop has Penguin and her babies. I use to wonder what all the fuss was about having a hen that would go broody, now I know. It's so much easier and adorable to watch! This is her second set and the chicks are just as friendly as long as I spend some time with them. My problem is going to be if Penguin goes broody 2 times a year I might not be able to resist getting her chicks each time. We might have to build more coops. I have done a pretty good job of controlling the chicken math so far. Over the last 5 years that we've had chickens we have only doubled our original number.

what breeds of Turkeys do you raise? someone said they got some penciled palms from you. so beautiful.
So sorry you lost one. I hope Pepito heals fast. Maybe he just wrenched his neck in the panic.I had my first non-domestic predator attack last night. All the birdies were in their coop, locked in, last night when I came out this morning, they were all out, except Annapurna, my new Brahma, who was locked in Mr. Darcy's old XL wire dog crate because of a boo-boo. The aviary netting was ripped and down, but none of the fences were breached. It must've been an aerial predator, or one who jumped in via the Mesquite tree. I don't know how the coop door opened. It can be sticky and maybe when the predator was in the pen outside the coop, they panicked? The door is not warped or broken. There are feathers everywhere in the pen and blood on a 6" x 3' area of the fencing. One of my new hens, the EE, is gone. I don't even see feathers of her color. Pepito Feo, the mixed runner I just got, is tramatized. He will barely raise his head. I looked him all over and couldn't find a feather out of place. I put him in the nesting box part of the coop in the shavings to be comfy. He can move a little; he is just so weak.
I am so depressed. I feel like I've let them down. And worst of all, I don't have the means (money, tools, material, or skills) to put a roof on the pen.
Alright. I have to pull it together to finish a paper on Gothic heros.
If you want more there is plenty! You want two bags? They make a very pretty low water use hedge. PM me and we can arrange a pick up time.I'll take one or half a bag if there's enough! =D
When do you have chicks in spring? I think I want to get a couple to raise for next year's holidays. Is there much difference in taste among the different heritage breeds?I raise a lot of different turkeys. They are all on my website except the Blue Red Bronze. That is a new one. I also have Royal Palm, Pencilled Palm, Bourbon Red, Slate, Lavender, Lilac, Red Slate. Might have some Red Pencilled Palms next year too if I can figure out how to set up another pen. Yes, Young-ah in Sierra Vista drove up and bought a pair of Pencilled Palms. I wasn't going to sell any but I felt I needed to thin out a little so the birds aren't so crowded. I think I sold them too cheap now that I think about it.
