Lights on for the turkey hens at least 14 hours. I start getting eggs in January and hatch through May.
As to taste...there is no comparison between a heritage turkey and a commercial double breasted turkey. I raise Narragansetts here in Cottonwood and can't grow enough for the holiday market

I've known for years by the way my tummy reacts to bread, etc. that I should be gluten free but I was dragging my feet because it seemed so daunting.  I've found that it's not so bad, really.  I feel a lot better so it's definitely worth it for me.  My daughter did it with me and her face cleared up! (teenager)

My family is GF too. My son and I both have celiac disease and GF is a necessity for us. It's been almost 5 years and your right, you do get used to it. We have adjusted an honestly don't miss much...except those wonderful, soft flour tortillas...there's just not substitute for a burrito.

Oh boy...I need a bigger yard. I'm already gardening and raising chickens. I'm new to both so I'm good on being adventurous for now. But I will have twice as much yard once my older kids move out on their own. They have two big dogs which I keep in one half of my backyard and away from my garden. One of them stripped all of the leaves off of my grapevines, twice! But they came back. So we built a fence to keep her out of there. I have 4 fruit trees and 4 grapevines. I'm getting ready to plant for I think my next project will be covers for my garden so the chicks won't eat everything.

I hatch, grow and process about 30 Narragansetts every year. I start the lights on the chickens in Oct and the turkeys in November...just about T-day. It takes the turkeys about a month to 6 weeks to start laying after the lights.

This applies to chickens as well, and I raise both. No need to raise turkeys I was replying to a post. Sorry that you feel I hijacked the post. Yes, it is backyard chickens, and perhaps I need to start a site of my own for just turkeys. There are a lot of growers of both, and poultry questions in general belong in all. I also raise all natural meat and egg ducks, but no you don't have to buy them too.

Beautiful! I can't wait until mine get big enough to go free range outside. I know it'll come soon enough LOL!

I have one that is weak, but so far everyone has survived. The weak one from a couple of days ago is fine. So now I just need to nurse this one along. I'm forcing it to drink and eat. Its just laying there sleeping a ton, no pasty butt, and I found his rear damp so I assume he's going to the bathroom. So all I can do at this point is keep forcing him to eat and drink and hope for the best.

It is so much fun to watch them grow up. I thought it would be forever too, but the chickens in my first flock are over a year old and we have new chicks (month old now) to watch grow up. I love them at every age!

I called animal control. Az dept of fish and wildlife and a turtle rescue. Also posted an ad on craigslist and answered an ad for a lost one on craigslist. No one has reported losing one of this size. some smaller ones yes but not this big.

If you don't find a home for the tortoise, we'll take it. As long as it's native that is. We've had a native as a resident in our yard for 11 years. He was old when we became his custodians.

It needs to happen soon though. They will be getting ready for hibernation soon. your's needs to come here in the next week or so or wait until summer.
