Arizona Chickens

I think turkeys are a lot more fun than chickens, although dumber. I was working in the yard this morning and every now and again I would gobble at them and they would answer back before I finished. Neighbors probably think I'm an idiot.

I definitely want to raise a few turkeys for personal use. However, didn't know they were dumber than chickens. Both our chickens have fallen into our pool (at different times) and have been unable to get out until my DH found them and lifted them out. They are a year and half old and have been in the yard, with the pool, their entire life

Careful...this Arizona thread is all over the place. Before you know it, you will have goats, an aquaponics system, greenhouse, guineas, peafowl, miniature horses, milk cow, alpacas, how about an emu or ostrich

That is what makes this thread so awesome!!!

You forgot Tortoises. Lol

LOOk at that guy!!! its HUGE!!! so beautiful.

Dont worry, this thread frequently veers away from chickens. I'm a turkey grower as well so feel free to carry on.
I have a pair. I think they are dumb as well. especially when they are young. When I was a kid we had some drown by watching the rain with their mouth open.

Whoa So did anyone think I was serious?
Keep it that way. People don't bother crazy people. Haha
It is fun to watch all the diversity in this thread. Males me want to read each response. I talk to my eggs in the incubator and coo to my hens and talk to all my animals so dont worry. I also gobble to adult Tom Turkeys. too funny to get them puffed up. :)

I have personally given turkeys mouth to beak resuscitation when they fell in the water. They are dumb as rocks.

This applies to chickens as well, and I raise both. No need to raise turkeys:) I was replying to a post. Sorry that you feel I hijacked the post. Yes, it is backyard chickens, and perhaps I need to start a site of my own for just turkeys. There are a lot of growers of both, and poultry questions in general belong in all. I also raise all natural meat and egg ducks, but no you don't have to buy them too. :)

You don't know @K9Dave , he was seriously teasing.

My 4 are a year old and have been raised with a pool their whole lives too. Don't tell me they will fall in the pool someday!

My turkeys that required resuscitation fell into the pool trying to drink from it. Their large drinker full of fresh water was 1' away in the other direction. The same ones fell in the pool 3x in one week. All survived until Thanksgiving.

Oh boy...I need a bigger yard. I'm already gardening and raising chickens. I'm new to both so I'm good on being adventurous for now. But I will have twice as much yard once my older kids move out on their own. They have two big dogs which I keep in one half of my backyard and away from my garden. One of them stripped all of the leaves off of my grapevines, twice! But they came back. So we built a fence to keep her out of there. I have 4 fruit trees and 4 grapevines. I'm getting ready to plant for I think my next project will be covers for my garden so the chicks won't eat everything.

great plan and a good idea :)

I hatch, grow and process about 30 Narragansetts every year. I start the lights on the chickens in Oct and the turkeys in November...just about T-day. It takes the turkeys about a month to 6 weeks to start laying after the lights.

sounds like a lot of fun, I miss my turkey that fell over dead about 6 weeks ago or so. :hit

......don't feel bad, you're not alone! I think my neighbors are all used to it, in fact I gave one of them two chicks and so she started doing some of the same things, lol :lau

this goes to show you that A chicken, "Can," really scare kittens and cats, lol!
.... this is my Barred rock named, "Tweedles, " who I was taking care of early stages of bumblefoot, my poor fatty! :p

Good morning everyone! I caught Wilma(Our Buff) in the act of laying her second egg. Thank goodness she uses the nesting boxes. Betty(Our Barred Rock) still won't use them and she has been laying for a month. Any suggestions?
