Arizona Chickens

Good morning everyone! I caught Wilma(Our Buff) in the act of laying her second egg. Thank goodness she uses the nesting boxes. Betty(Our Barred Rock) still won't use them and she has been laying for a month. Any suggestions?

Have a few questions;
Do you only have the two chickens?
Does your BR lay in the same place each time?

If I were you I would get some fake eggs & put them in the nest, or all of the nests you have designated for them to lay.. Just leave them there..a few hens have their favorite nesting box..
However, when one has gone broody & decides that she is not going to move till baby chicks come,
they will go and find another spot. Your girl, "Betty" must choose a spot that she feels comfortable in.
We have found eggs on the ground before, not to often, but still weird to find one just out in the open.. They must of been in a hurry & thought to themselves " OH! I hear mom & dad coming with some treats!". :idunno little stinkers, spoiled too...

Well, we are about to lose another hen with the exact same symptoms. I noticed this one it seems like a day sooner than the last. She was very slow to move. Stayed in the same spot for hours. Now she is no longer able to keep her head up or keep her eyes open. I finally discovered what I think the problem is so I think I'll be treating for cocci. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/coccidiosis-how-to-treat-it

According to this article, it is more likely to occur during the summer months and describes everything I've been experiencing with both of these losses. I'll be treating my whole flock now to make sure I stop it in its tracks. Anyone use corid 9.6% solution before?

Someone on Tucson CLUCKS suggests it might be botulism.

Are you sure she's not eggbound? A hen that is egg bound will hold her head down, wings will be hanging down to her sides, laying down, eyes closed, staying in the same position. Try gently picking her up and gently feeling her abdomen but keep her in an upright position, don't put her on her back. If she's eggbound fill a tub with very warm water and submerge her bum in it for about 15 minutes and put vegetable oil on her vent. If you have liquid calcium put that in her water and keep her in a dark, quiet place.

Her symptoms sound so much like a hen eggbound but I don't know if your girl is laying yet or if this is a young pullet.

Hi All!

I live in the Cayman Islands, and I'll be in the states for a very brief stay in mid November and I'm hoping to get some fertile hatching eggs. I'm not too choosy, I just want breeds that aren't here on the island already. I'm looking for Polish, Frizzle Polish or Frizzle anything. Silkies too but not white.
I would rather buy from a person rather than a company due to the fact that I need them to be as fresh as possible and they need to be posted at exactly the right time to coincide with my visit stateside.
I'll be visiting my sister in-law in Oro Valley near Tucson.

Thanks!

1000

You will be close to people that pretty much what you want.. What breeds do you ave now?

My 4 are a year old and have been raised with a pool their whole lives too. Don't tell me they will fall in the pool someday!

A fried just told me tonight that she set up little Quaill pans to watch them drink. Until that is she found dead babies in it. She then put in a chicken wire bottom.

No, jungle fowl are different.. They are banty's.. Very small..

Which and why do you like?

We tried raised beds with seriously amended soil with limited success, but ground critters were climbing the fence to get in!  Right now, I have 5 "City Picker" wicking boxes going with beans, squash, and onions and they are doing a pretty good job.  I think we'll experiment with aquaponics over the winter.  Does anyone know of a workshop or class for beginners?

I see a lot of free above ground pools on CL. Always thought of doing Aquaponics with one.

(thousands of pages ago...)

I've had numerous chickens of various breeds and had a lovely colorful egg basket for a few years.

Well now ... I am down to ... zero chickens

I want to get back in the game, though, and start up my new flock. I will probably hit the feed stores like I did last time (ordering chicks is so 'spensive

) ... UNLESS ...

Anybody got some chicks to sell?

or even ... dare I ask ... chicks and ducklings?

I'm looking to buy in the next few weeks but figured I'd better get the word out now. I'm not really picky on breeds, in fact I'd prefer all different breeds, a hodgepodge of chickababes, variety is the spice of life and all

Thanks in advance!!

Not sure where you live but I have a friend with chicks and ducks in Tucson. Also our feed store in Marana has barred rocks , Rhode Island Red, and EE pullets for 3.99. I only have a couple of bantams for sale at the moment.
