Arizona Chickens

WHO WANTS A ROOSTER?

I could not wait any longer for my girls to start laying (they are 4-5 months old), so I bought two 7-month olds last night (a Buff Orpington and a Barred Rock). We are hoping to get our first egg today!

In the meantime, I have 5 roosters that need a new home ASAP. I am hesitant to post on Craigslist, because I do not want someone fighting them or eating them.
Would any of you wonderful people like one? We are keeping the 2 RIR females, but their 5 brothers need to go.

We have raised them since they were 1-2 months old. They are 4-5 months old now. They are spoiled rotten. They eat fresh fruits and veggies, live on acre of land, free range, and have a mister. But, these boys need hens of their own. They are mixed: Rhode Island Red + Orpington (4 available) and Australorp + Orpington (1 available). None of them have ever been aggressive with us or the children.

If you do not intend to harm my boys, please contact me and we will schedule a time to meet.
I can text or e-mail pictures too.

P.S. Do any of you have any leads to a rescue in AZ?

Thanks for all the kind words about my daughter. We're so proud of her. We're in Bouldering season right now, so no harnesses. Generally they don't climb higher than 20' and they have a good mat to fall on which they're very good at. It often takes my breath away watching it though, worrying. I didn't take the picture, just linked it from the team web site (it was taken by a friend with a very nice SLR). She had attempted that route twice previously and what you don't see is that the picture was taken mid-leap, a fraction of a second later both legs were far from the wall and she was holding on with one hand. That time she was able to grab on with the other and stop her momentum from sending her sailing.

There was an adult rock climbing competition held in the same gym right after the youth competition ended. This video was taken of that later comp, it has a completely different atmosphere, but you get an idea of what the climbing looks like.

That was incredible! I can't imagine the strength it takes to do this. Your daughter is as amazing as you Gallo! Bravo!

ok ok, my almost 12 year old is going to want to meet your daughter she's going to be so envious of her, lol. My own daughter is kind of an athlete of her own and so, be sure let us know (East Valley BYC er's)when you're in the East Valley and we'll hook up and meet with you for lunch or a pot of coffee or tea. Of course IF you have the time available! :D

I think these are the black solder fly.. I would love to have some.. We had them take over our un maintained compost one year, forever ago, when I had no idea what they were.. SO, one day it started to rain, I had to put up a huge tarp over our shop, I climbed up the 6 foot wall to attach, no shoes on, of course,.. Jumped down to find my shoes, in the dark with the rain coming down.. Could not find my shoe, so off I go to dump the container.. ON MY WAY, those gross, creepy things, literally came alive out from the compost and were slowly moving on the ground, up the walls, in the trees, up my legs.. YES, yuck. Totally freaked me out.. So I stopped doing compost.. but now that I have chickens
"Build it, and they will come." :lau Saw that in a movie once! (Field of Dreams).
@City farm I can give you some. They are just starting to produce well now that it's cooled down some. @cyborg is right, if you build a something to house them with appropriate media to grow the larvae the BSF females will seek it out and lay their eggs in it so their offspring can grow there. They will be able to smell the media. The media can be kitchen scraps, old meat, wet yard waste, left over fermented feed, grass clippings, coffee grounds, soaked alfalfa pellets, etc. There are as many types of containers you can make as there are people, and there is at least one you can buy that is ready to use but it's too expensive for my budget. All have a way for the mature larvae to leave the wet/damp media in search of a dry place to pupate and they climb to do this so if you incorporate a ramp that ends in a container to collect them they self harvest at maturity. Here are a few of examples.

Oh thank you girl! We would love some.. Come by & we can watch drunk history.. :weee Did you see if you can get the program on your T.V.? And for the gentleman in the photo ? working with chickens & dirt in a dress shirt.. Huh. He has style..

Yes this is disappointing.. $40.00 wow, that is a lot.. Between all of us on here we can do our own and talk chicken.. Plus it is free.. So many people have chickens that are not on here. Just in our 3 block radius we have 5 of us.. The progressive coop party would be best if there was one in east Phoenix, Tempe then Mesa or vice a versa.. If ya all want to do it, say so and we will have to see who is willing to host. We don't mind hosting.. I wont be able to do it untill our frontyard patio is done.. since this will take 3-4 hours it should be a potluck.. Put the $40.00 towards some good old home cooking... I will ask our neighbors if they want to open their coops up to us...
That would be funny if we did this and just blew them out of the water with the amounts of coops and people.

$40!!!

Add the cost of a tank of gas to drive all over the city and that prices a lot of people right out of it. Doesn't seem like a good way to promote sustainability. Imagine the coop tour you could create with just a fraction of the BYCers that have posted on this thread. You could even do two, each on different weekends, an east side and a west tour.

It seems like the tour is not well planned. I would have thought a bus would be taking people around. I wonder what that would cost and if you could get Purina or Nutrients to sponsor door prizes for the tour attendees and have them vote on their favorite coop and give them a prize too. I bet Lowes would donate something like a new wheelbarrow or $ off chicken wire or something.
