Passion fruit for me too, please! I can transport from Tucson when they are ready. We travel back and forth a lot. When are they ripe?

My Moringa just died. I grew it from seed directly in the ground and it was doing great. It was about 2 feet tall but it looks like some kind of insect ate the stem and the whole thing died. :-(
I guess I'll try again next spring.

Perfect! I'm not sure when they are supposed to ripen here so I don't know what to expect. I've read that as long as they don't die back, they'll continuously produce fruit. My moringas did well, even the ones in pots. However, only the ones planted in the ground flowered and produced seeds. I still have an extra for you if you're interested.

One of my three moringas in the ground did very well. I hope the seeds finish developing before the first frost.

Not a problem, I made about a dozen cuttings this morning. That's great about experiencing the fruits in Hawaii! I read that a lot of passion fruits are grown commercially there. I think that with their short shelf life it's difficult to find them to buy fresh. My Fuji apple has three apples this year! Which is three more than it's ever produced.

I'm not sure if we could grow a true guava here in Tucson with our colder winter temps. My pineapple guava flowered like crazy this spring, but no fruit developed.

Gallo, if you are making cuttings, I'd like a couple. Will trade you something--eggs? I have a friend who grows Brazilian guavas. He gets fruit but goes to extreme lengths to protect it in the winter. He also has it against a south wall and it is protected on the west side as well and he covers the whole thing in the winter. I have 2 trees from him but they are just in 5-gal pots and not doing that well. I have problems with grubs getting in and feeding on the roots. I have a pineapple guava but never get any fruit and very few flowers.

Sure! Does your friend get fruit from his Brazilian guavas? I'm disappointed to hear about your poorly producing pineapple guava.

Do you have it on regular irrigation?

There seems to be a lot of interest in Tucson in growing rare fruits. I belong to a very small group of Rare Fruit Growers. We have been meeting monthly at EcoGrow on St. Mary's. Just this morning I got this email from our "President", Chris Marshall:

"Unaware that we existed (not a surprise), a young woman named Alana Stern has been organizing a new chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers for Tucson. She apparently has a lot of enthusiasm and energy as demonstrated by how far she has gone already. She has reserved meeting space at Randolph Center with a first meeting on Nov 8, she has found a heated greenhouse and adjacent fields in Marana for establishing a group garden including tropicals and she has been actively putting out materials to recruit members.
For all of you who know something of our history and my involvement, It will come as no surprise that I personally would be happy to have our group form a founding core of the new club and let Alana be in charge. She will be sending out another email with some additional details. I hope to continue my involvement with the new group and I hope you will as well. Let's all try to make this initial meeting."

This meeting place is far more central than where we currently meet, but I will try to make the meeting and thought some of you might be interested, especially Gallo, you are really close. I have always thought our Rare Fruit Growers group should be much larger than it is but perhaps a new "go-getter" is what is needed.

Yes, he gets fruit. My pineapple guava is in my covered garden and gets hose irrigation and probably not regularly enough. Also, it is under a 50% shade cloth because I thought they wouldn't do well in full sun, but it is acting like it is getting too much shade (looks a little leggy). You've seen my place, I just have too many irons in the fire. Hard to give TLC to everything.

Oh, and this morning, our helper saw a bobcat wandering the yard, acting like it owned the place. I was busy butchering chickens at the time so couldn't stop to see it but still nothing has gone in my traps since that last kill. Wonder if it was this bobcat?

OK, and talking about fruit...I am making a run down to Briggs and Eggers Orchard in Willcox Monday (tomorrow) or Tuesday for organic apples. I am picking up for other people, but they have to be able to pick up at my house (Ina and Silverbell area). I still have room for 8-10 more boxes. I will be picking up Pink Lady and/or Fuji. We like the Pink Lady better but I think they still have Fuji. Will call them before just to double check. Price is $25 for a 40-lb box plus $2.50 per box to help cover gas---so $27.50 per 40 lb box. These are organic apples and will keep well IF you can refrigerate them. PM me ASAP if you want in on the apples or call 744-4211.
You can always split a box with a neighbor if you don't want 40 lb.

Oh, and the apple boxes make dandy chicken transport boxes with some holes cut in them as they are heavy duty

I'm a 5th grade teacher in Avondale, AZ. I'm looking for about a dozen to a dozen and a half fertilized chicken eggs for an embryology unit with my 5th graders. Can anyone local help? I'm trying to avoid ordering them from EBay or craiglist.  I'm not picking about the breed... they will be given to a friend of mine that has a ranch in North Phoenix.  Thanks for the help!

hello Cindy, we have learned that Trader Joe's sells a dozen of fertilized eggs that's the cross of the leg horn and I don't remember what the other is. That might help you and I think those might not be more than maybe three bucks. But don't quote me on the price. Hopefully that helps and have a great time with your kids!

....if a couple of the seeds I started from my Caribbean guava make it I will give you each one, if you have the determination to keep it warm when the winter frost comes, for example by placing Christmas lights on it for warmth, Excetera

you are a bit far from us for eggs as I am in Tucson but hopefully someone has some in your area.

That would be awesome, Please keep us updated. I love fruit trees and I would love to grow them. Just to let everyone know I have seeds for those trees with the purple flowers. says it can cause dogs to hallucinate, not sure if it can be around chickens. I also have aloe vera and mint if anyone needs some.
