Arizona Chickens

I also have yet to identify all of them lol. I know my two Americaunas, and the Wyandotte, and the barred hollands and barred rocks, but I cannot tell which is my red sex link and which is my golden sex link. We have one that looks identical to the red sex link pictures ("Lucy") but I have one that is slightly darker red with black feathers here and there in her wings and tail. She is beautiful, but not what I would expect out of a golden sex link. Any ideas on her actual breed? I purchased from IdealPoultry.com. She is medium sized bird. Of all, she is the one that shows the most aggressive behavior towards people (which kind of pisses me off). When she sees me coming to try to grab her she will puff out her chest and jump (almost straight up). She doesn't get handled much b/c I don't really like to piss them off for no reason. I have 8 other hens to pet lol.

FIRST EGG TODAY!!! We've been waiting around a little over 5 months after getting our "day old" chicks. We got our first egg from one of the barred rocks today. I expect our other barred rock will start soon after. This is my first flock. Now that I have one of the nine laying, are the others going to be more inclined to lay? I have (2) Americauna, (2) Barred Holland, (1) Red Sex Link, (1) Silver Laced Wyandotte, and (1) Golden Sex Link. Any idea how long it will take the others to start?

They will start when they're ready, and not a minute before. But, within the next week or two, you can cross eggs off your grocery list.

Yeah on your first egg! They are always eggciting! I'm surprised one of your sex links didn't lay first, they are often the first to lay. I'm with Cyborg though, they will lay when they are ready.

Sex links are a cross breed and each hatchery can have different looking hens resulting from what they use to cross with. My gold sex links all look identical, so much so I put leg bands on them so I could tell them apart. They are molting out with different color feathers so they look almost splashed.

My red sex links look very different from each other, one is mostly light red like a pale RIR, the other has scalloped feathers.

Well it looks like we lost our rooster

we were out late last night and I just assumed everyone was all good for the night (I normal check on them) and it looks like the tarp fell down and the rooster jumped out. The neighbor kids said that they had picked him up and was taking him back to the coop (I let them play with the chickens all the time so they knew who's it was) but they said their aunt yelled at them and made them put him down even after they explained who's rooster it was. My mom is very sad because it was more her rooster.

red sex link and golden sex link are the same breed - also known as red comets and I think there is another name but can't remember.

Hi.... :frow It has been a long time. The Louisiana State Fair was more like a county fair. They had maybe 50 or 60 chickens, and non looked that great. Half of them were young broilers...... LOL. They never look great at 11 & 12 weeks. They were 4 H and FFA birds. There was 1 live stock barn, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. No horses, mules and donkeys the first week. I didn't go back a second time.

I will be leaving here tomorrow, I would like to visit and met some of the members before Phoenix. I will have no place to park until the 15th. It is only about 1,200 or so miles, not a 10 day trip. I will probably stop mid way for 2 nights so the girls can get out and stretch their legs and wings. I will try to keep everyone posted on my progress across country. But I will probably make Tucson by the 10th.

I have a wounded wing, so I have no idea when I will be on the road again, even thou I will be staying out in Blythe, from mid Dec on. We will see. It will break my heart if I can not keep my girls. They have me trained. And Sweetie Pie is, I think a real looker. I will check back before I leave. Do Idea when I will have WiFi again. This place has it but there are to mNy people using it.

It's always good to hear from you LKD. Am so glad to hear you are traveling safely and having interesting experiences. I look forward to further updates.

Not chicken related, but backyard related

We have movement!!!! My first rabbit doe was laying down tonight and I could clearly see her fur moving in a different direction than her breathing. As I looked more closely, it was amazing to see the waves of movement through her fur in the abdominal area!!!! She was mated to our buck 3 weeks ago yesterday. I had no idea if it took because it was still warm out and they are both first timers. Can you tell I'm a little excited. Thanks for letting me share my enthusiasm. To think that I was in the deepest depression when I first started out with chickens 2 years ago. Through everything I learn on this forum, I am moving closer to my dream of owning my own small homestead and becoming more self reliant. I am so glad to share the journey with you peeps. Even if I wouldn't know you to bump into you. You have made a positive contribution and I'm thankful for that.
