I also have pox going through my flock. 3 had just dry pox and 2 had wet pox. one of those two died before I figured out what was going on. I only saw scabs until I looked in her mouth, then I saw all the white stuff. I scraped out as much as I could without hurting her and it helped a lot! Also I read somewhere pumpkin does good things for their immune systems so I have been cooking them pumpkin. Also Apple cider Vinegar in their water and vitamins in the water. They all love the pumpkin and the few that just had the dry pox cleared up pretty fast, and the one with wet pox is clearing up as well. My neighbor has a pool that is green and doesn't do anything with it. We have mosquitos soooo bad!! I need to call the city.

Hopefully They fixed it, unfortunately most people don't care much... I have heard sooo many stories. I have the fish in my pond, but the stupid mallards keep eating them. hahahah at least I have an unlimited supply source

Thank you for alerting me to fowl pox, with my traveling, my girls are at risk. I will be considering vaccination for them. Although I do not know if I will be able to keep them. I have a bad wing. I am going to see the doctor about it when I get in town. If they operate on me, depending on what they find, I am worried. They are both very sweet.

They have no fear of dogs it seems. I have had dogs come up to their pen and they, my girls, will come over to check out the new dog. So far lucky, no one, the dogs, has seemed more the curious about them. To day a Boston Terrier, it got its nose picked. It had never seen a chicken before.

It will be nice being home for a few weeks, despite the fear of the unknown... My shoulder thing. I will be in on the 15th to the 15th of Dec.

Looks like several of my other birds are getting the fowl pox too. I just hope none of them get the wet.
We were missing a bird for the last two days. I had looked over the fence into the neighbors yard and never saw her until yesterday. Apparently, even with a clipped wing she jumped the 6 foot fence. We have been in our house now for nearly a year. The west side neighbors are very nice about the chickens and frequently speak to us. The neighbors on the east side we have only seen the man once, before closing on the house, we have tried several time to go over and introduce ourselves and they were not home or didn't answer.
So, of course the chicken goes over the fence on the east side!

Our coop is on that side of the yard, when building it we knocked on the neighbors door multiple times because we wanted to build in the shade but that was not the regulated 40 ft from their building. Since we didn't connect with them we decided to just build (I know, not the smartest). We also took into consideration that in the shade the coop, although closer to their house, would be hidden behind large trees from their view in their backyard, which I was hoping they would appreciate.
So, I went armed with a dozen fresh eggs to the neighbors yesterday to collect my disobedient chicken. The wife answers the door, whom I have never met. "Hi, I'm your neighbor, here are some fresh eggs and uh, my chicken is in your yard." She was nice and let me go back to get her but then let me know that her bedroom is on the same side of the yard as the coop. While she said appreciates the fact that there is no smell, however, my coop is not legal. I admitted that she was right, let her know I tried to get in touch with her before building and that I could look into geting a forklift to move the coop but then it would be in plain view from her back yard. She didn't seem to like that idea and said her main concern was if they ever sold.....ahhhh, property value! Really?
When we first moved in the previous owner was feeding a TON of ferral cats. We trapped a lot of them and spayed/nuetered then released back and in my opinion being over run with feral cats (who were marking, etc) is worse than chickens, but I guess we all have our battles. Looks like I will need to supply her with eggs frequently to keep her on my side and liking my chickens

But, I got the chicken, brought her home and she dove into the feed right away. She must have been starving since she was gone for 2 days. I trimmed her wings up but there really weren't any long feathers so I'm not sure how she got over the fence.

Last night something tried to dig under the fence of my large pen currently housing all my older laying hens. Probably the same predator that got my Barred Rock cockerels since I never caught it. It is the same fence line only a bit farther down. Only this time, after throwing rocks away from the fence, it met welded wire and was stopped

So my predator repair had a test and passed. It tried to get in around 6-8 feet of fence line based on where the rocks were moved. There are 47 hens in that pen, some I am still using for breeding, so it would have been devastating if something got in there.

Hi everyone! So I'm finally coming to grips with our tragedy and wanted to pop in with an update to what's been going on around here. We decided we will be getting more chicks. I actually ordered them today. They will be here in early April. I am excited but also terrified as I don't want to fail them like I did my other girls. I know what happened will be a haunting reminder to never leave the gate open no matter how tired or lazy or whatever it was that caused me to be forgetful that night. We ordered 9 expecting that ordering a larger batch we have a greater chance of a rooster or losing one in transit. We once again got them from MPC since we were very happy with the quality of the birds last time we ordered from them.

These are the breeds we got:

Salmon Faverolles
Easter Egger
Blue Silkie
Golden Laced Polish
White Sultan
Black Copper Marans
Blue Ameraucana
Silver Laced Cochin
Olive Egger

I tried to get different breeds and color combinations from our past chickens so I'm not reminded of them so much. I wasn't sure how I'd handle seeing one that looked exactly like one of the hens that was killed. I was only going to get pure breeds but we decided getting an olive egger was a good choice for egg color variety, and also got an easter egger for a chance at a blue egg in case the Ameraucana ends up being a rooster. We never got our blue egg from our feed store EE, if you recall Eleanor ended up laying cream. So we weren't missing out on a blue egg this round. Hopefully I made good choices.

We are planning on expanding our run this winter. We'll be doubling it to 8x16 so the 9 birds should have a lot more space should they need to be confined to the run for any period of time.

In non chicken related news, I recall a couple of you being interested in the convention we were going to be attending and I was making a costume for. We did go to Blizzcon this past weekend and it was amazing. Here's how my costume turned out.



Thank you all again for the support you sent me after our attack. I'm going to try to skim through some posts that I've missed the last month. I know the predators are out in full force as I'm reading a lot about coyote and hawk attacks from different chicken owners around the country. I hope everyone is doing well and I can't wait to show you all our new babies this spring.
