Arizona Chickens

Hi all!  Been busy lately.  Currently avoiding getting work done, so here I am!  My 4 older hens are doing great.  2 are going through a crazy molt!  Have 4 younger hens that are just about point of lay.  With the molt,  I'm only getting 1 or 2 eggs a day--can't wait to have a few more.   

I have 8 Cornish cross meat chickens about ready to process and a few EE packing peanuts.  4 of the EEs are male, but 1 is female--I'd love to have another green or blue egg layer!  These EEs, one in particular, are going to be huge, gorgeous birds.  I wish I could have a roo. 

We've had a ton of coyotes traveling the wash behind my house.  I've also had a Harris's hawk and Cooper's hawk stalking my chickens.  Everything loves a good chicken dinner.  So far, everyone has stayed safe, sound, and protected. 

I interviewed for a job in a rural area.  Haven't heard back so I'm assuming I didn't get it.  Sort of glad as I think the lifestyle isn't actually the best for me....but I was also dreaming about all the chickens I could keep. 

A BIG THANK YOU@desertmarcy. I stopped by her place and picked up 5 SQ Black Ameraucanas this morning. I didn't have the money when she was ready to sell them, so she held them for me until I got paid. (Thanks again, Marcy!). I picked up one cockerel and 4 pullets to add blue eggs to my current laying flock. With the partridge Cochins, Black Giants, golden sex links, Black Copper Marans, and barred Rock, I'm getting a dozen to a dozen and a half eggs a day of every shade of brown from cream to chocolate. Can't wait to add some blues!

Hi Arizona peeps! I live in Yuma. With the heat of the summer I am considering a 3-sided coop. I'm concerned about The occasional cold or freezing temps we have. Any comments or suggestions?

A 3-sided coop would be good, you need as much ventilation and shade as you can build into it, especially in Yuma! No need to worry about the occasional cold front we get down here, the chickens LOVE the cool weather. Have a look at my coop to see what I've done for ventilation and shade.

That's quite a collection you've got going there! The egg palate is going to be beautiful with the new additions.

I lost one of my 7 week old chicks to a cooper's hawk this morning.

We had just named them Penny, Amy, Bernadette and Emily. The hawk got Amy, the BR. :-(
I didn't see her get taken but I saw the hawk in the yard and a couple of feathers from Amy. The other 3 are hunkered down in their grow out coop with Penguin. I guess no more free-ranging for the chickies. Penguin is going to go crazy in there, though. She'll probably leave the chicks sooner now.

Dang hawks. Seven weeks old is just the perfect meal size for the Cooper's too.

Hey guys I am needing to rehome a pretty set of birds. These are LF light Brahamas. I have a 7month cockrel a 7 month pullet who is laying and 2- 1.5 yr old hens. 1 is molting and one is finished molting and looks like she should be laying pretty quick. I am asking 50.00 for them. These birds are huge and are reported to take a year to fully mature. They are sweet and gentle birds.

Do you still have the hens? I might be interested in them, if I can sneak them past DH

After the Tucson show I will be setting eggs; I am only going to hatch to order this year, PM me if you want to make arrangements for chicks. First up will be EE & olive eggers. As day olds they will be straight run, which I know can be an issue for some of you, but I just can't get the hang of vent sexing!

what is your price for chicks? I have 2 olive eggers from my own backyard mix, but they decided to go on an egg laying vacation.

I have a design you might like, i'll post pictures soon. Its 4 sided, but one side has large double doors that are just chicken wire/ hardware cloth. they can be covered with a board too - which we currently do at night because there have been a few coyotes out in our neighborhood.

and a bit of good news for us - we met one of the neighbors down the street who has chickens and so do the people across the way from us! and they have roosters! he said we wont have a problem at all and was impressed with our big Optimus. He keeps his granddaughters show chickens, so I was proud that he liked mine (even tho he's not show quality)
btw, I think that home values should go up if your neighbor has chickens! I forgot who posted about this, but I'm sorry about your snooty neighbor.

I missed out on some of the breeds that I wanted this past spring, so this year I got my order in as soon as Meyer opened up ordering I got Egyptian Fayoumis, Easter Eggers and Red Sex-links. As always, I ordered more than I need so that I'd get the bulk discount and save on shipping, so I'll have extras. My order is scheduled to arrive in the middle of June. Since its so far out, I can also add extra chicks onto my order, if anyone wants to get chicks from Meyer in mid-June.

No crowing from my Jersey Giant cockerel yet, which is a good thing. I'm hoping that he'll stay quiet for another month, since I'd like to invite him to dinner on Christmas Eve.

What breeds of chickens do you have or want? 3 sided is a great idea, along with tons of shade, frozen treats & saucers full of water for them. As for the cold, honestly I think they will be fine. However unless we have a blizzard..

Maybe you could extend your coop with a small run with netting?
