Arizona Chickens

Yea I'm still wearing shorts in this weather. Lol

Give it a year and your blood will start to thin a little. We moved here from Carson City, NV in the summer heat of July too. That first year was pretty rough, though I do enjoy the low humidity here. It makes for fewer aches and pains....and early garden harvests. Last year I began harvesting "winter" crops in January!

X2!

Welcome to BYC allsummedup!

My Very 1st Egg! one of the 2 RSL decided to grant me with a little Fairy Egg. I have 3 chicks that are 7 months old now, 2 RSL and 1 EE............ I was giving up hope for an egg.
Small, but it's an EGG! I have 3 more little girl EE in the garage that are 1 month old. I'll let the GD have this one. she claimed on of the baby EE for her self and named her Buttermilk. to go along with Nugget and Kung Poa. I think it was Breakfast that laid this egg. Lunch's comb isn't as red and Dinner is the other EE.
YAY! Finally!

Grats on the first egg! The fiancé has already acclimated quite well but then he isn't from Alaska like I am so that too be expected. I figure in another few months I will have been here almost a year and will be fitting in just fine. Like I always tell him as long as I can have my garden and my chickens/turkeys I can put up with just about anything else.

By the way, our welsumers have been laying beginning in late summer, till now. She is still going strong..

What do you guys think are the best breeds for someone new to owning chickens? My friend is getting into chickens and I'm making a list of general info for him, and I always just suggest feed store layers.

Well, I'm a complete newbie as well, and I must say that my Australorps and Barred Rocks have been fantastic to start out with. They're all very friendly, affectionate, highly trainable, and wonderfully energetic. None of my birds are old enough to start laying yet, but raising them from chicks has turned into one of the best experiences of my life.

I also have a few Silkies, and I adore them, but if I were starting all over again I would wait to get the Silkies until I had a good production flock going.
