Arizona Chickens

Yes some are molting hard.  What's up with that?  I figured they would be done by now.  No eggs from the chickens.  About half the quail are laying, They seem to molt faster than chickens.  The quail hens that have finished their molts are laying again as some others have begun but it's nice to be getting some eggs from them.

One of my orp girls just started to molt while all the others are finally done and laying again. I think my old AMs are finally done with laying for good, molt done but no eggs, not even a tiny fairy egg. Some of my EEs have developed a bad habit and are flying over to the neighbor's and leaving them eggs in their garden. One of my orp hens that I thought I lost turned up the other day with 2 chicks, 1 EE & 1 Marans. The Marans is a cockerel, knowing my luck these days the other one is too.

Sounds like a good deal, I almost went this route but was afraid of the quality the boxes might turn out to be. Looks like this is better though. I ended up making the hive and and frames and just bought some rite cell to go into the frames. Placed the hive at my MIL house after long debates 2 weeks ago, doubt any swarms will be flying around this time of year. The local meeting is in 2 days in Phx and I just might be able to make this one.

Yes, it's a great deal! Bees are where you're going to spend the money, depending on the type you get. I didn't nor do have bees but a good friend does so I learned a lot. I remember she said something about a smaller European bee that is docile but very productive. Let me know if you want more info and I can ask her. I think I may have some books she gave me too if you're interested in those.

I don't know how to do the multiple quote thing or I would have included it but was wondering if your friend sells colonies?

Looks like I'll be down in the big valley for saturday to pick up Bonnie's two well traveled. Now I will have seven broodies.  Yikes 

Is anyone interred in my farmers INCUBATOR includes two rocking beds, and an electric candle light. I'll try to post pictures.

I joined back in May and have been trying to catch up on all the posts since. I have finally caught up and will try to stay current. My oldest chickens are five years old and I have learned a lot since they were chicks. I am learning even more from Arizona BYC members.

@desertmarcy, do you still have any of the New Hampshire hens available? If so, I am interested. Thanks.

New Hampshire was my mom's favorite breed when she was growing up on a farm. Of course, the hatchery ones that I currently have are not at all like the ones she remembers. I started with hatchery chicks from Ideal with the goal of learning on them before working with a heritage bread. Since my mom's ancestors were from Germany, the German strain would be very appropriate for my first heritage chickens.

Who's name is Bonnie? I am a Bonnie as well and I had to triple read that post. hahahahah. I was like, did I make a deal? I don't have any broodies but the duck!!! 

Not sure if I spell it correctly, but " lady cody Doria" she was on the west side and took her chicken's across the country on a long vacation.. She did pop on over for a roasted marshmallow last weekend. I asked her if they were laying while she traveled, & the answer was NO.. So her girls will be laying when "flower" gets them home... Yeehaaa!

I'm so excited!!! I just ordered an R-Com MX20 Fully Automatic incubator for my Xmas present! It looks like 2015 with be my first "egg hatching" year.

@Annalog yes I have 7 New Hampshire hens but they are all supposed to be going, tomorrow I hope, to a poultry judge friend who is going to work with them and breed them to the SOP. They are beautiful birds and I had the only one entered in the Tucson show in Nov, so not very commonly seen around here, but I just don't have the time or space to do justice to breeding so many breeds, so they are going.

Now if you want Blue or Black Copper Marans, Barred Rocks or Rhode Island Reds, I can fix you up!

I live in north Florida and while it is not the desert it does get up into the triple digits during the summer. I would recommend almost complete shade (if not complete) during the summer and putting the chicken nipples on a bucket with a toilet float as low as you can get it so that the water has to fill frequently so it stays semi cool. Then I would also recommend supplementing with fodder as this will also give them extra moisture in their food and cuts down a lot of your feed bill. It also gives them greens to eat I don't know about where you live but the grass gets pretty crunchy here in the summer. I also wet down part of their pen during the day so they can dig around in the cool dirt they really like that and come running when they see the hose.
