Arizona Chickens

My DH and I FINALLY got the new run up and ready for the chicks to start enjoying. We still have to add something to the top to protect from aerial predators, but we got a lot done today and I'm pretty sure my flock approves of the results.

Your set-up looks nice. To protect from aerial predators, we used camo cloth - not only does it hide the chickens from the predators, it also gives them some shade.

Thank you both on your great feedback. This week we are tuning off the lamp in the garage and opening the door during the day. Then this weekend we will set their coop next to the big chickens coop so they can see each other but not peck at the little ones. We'll turn the heat lamp on at night and gradually change the bulb to less wattage.

The 1 layer that I have started with a 1.4 oz and now her 12 & 13 egg have both been 1.9 oz so they are gradually getting bigger. She hasn't taken a break at all. Wish the other 2 would take notes. Could use them for all the Holiday baking..... I did find a scale on how much each size of egg should weigh so I can adjust recipes....... right now, 3 eggs = 2 store larges.

My chickens lay eggs ranging from medium to jumbo, so baking can be a bit of a challenge! Rather than have to calculate or guestimate every time I bake, I take a dozen eggs and beat them, then figure 1.75 oz per large egg. It really makes baking alot easier since I started doing this!

This is the chart I use. I like your method. I'm still using store bought for cooking, because oh my...... nothing beats the taste of a fried, "almost" orange creamy yoke freshly laid.

My GD has fun weighing them on the postal scale, writing the weight on them and candling. Guess my 1 layer is now up to med. almost large.

Here is the link to order feed.

I'm glad to find out you use this feed! I just ordered 150 lbs of the stuff to give a try...but down in Tucson, not Phoenix. I'm finishing off some other food and will start blending the two next week to acclimate the chickens to the change. I don't know if this is necessary to do or not, but I'm in the habit of doing it whenever I have to change my dogs' feed, so it's kind of second nature to do it with my chickens too.
