Arizona Chickens

I have 1/9 laying eggs. My marans is finally laying again--a beautiful dark brown egg every couple of days. 2 others appear to have finished molting weeks ago, but still aren't laying, and one barred rock is still filling out. 4 pullets should be laying any freaking day now, and 1 is just 3 months old, so she'll be a while yet. The 4 pullets are full-sized, reddened face, wattles and combs...but haven't started to squat yet. Anyway, 3 of 9 should be laying, and that would be sufficient to keep me in eggs if those 2 slackers would pull their weight!

I'm also keeping an eye on my flock for fowl pox. I know it's been going around the Tucson area like crazy. My marans does indeed have blood spots on her comb that could be pox, but she has no other symptoms. Her comb could be getting pecked by others, though she's decently high in the pecking order. She's also the biggest chicken, so I've checked the roof of the nesting boxes to make sure no nails are snags are getting her. She may also be hitting her comb coming down/up the ramp into the coop (small opening)--I'll have to check that for nails/snags as well. There's absolutely no way it's frostbite.

eta: reading more about pox, her comb is not fitting the symptoms or progression of dry pox. But I will keep an eye on it, and definitely double check all the places she could be getting her comb scrapped by a nail.

SO now that I have an incubator (thanks @flower and @CityFarm ) (money tomorrow as planned) I want to find out if anyone has fertile eggs for hatching. Unfortunately the duck eggs did not make it (they blew up) so now I want to move on. Once the duck lays again I will be doing some of her eggs, but she seems to be content to free load for now. I would love to find some local to me stuff that I can pick up or some that you would be willing to ship. Please let me know if/what you have and how much! I am excited to start another level of my chicken obsession!

Full size chickens, I am not ready for smaller breeds yet, have to convince the hubbs to let me have another coop.

Hi Everyone,

I am new here and in Tucson. I don't have chickens yet but they are in the plan. I have bewen reading BYC for a while and have learned more than I ever thought possible about chickens! ...and numerous other subjects, building coops, composting...etc. I started feeling awkward reading and not introducing myself so instead of waiting for chickens, I joined up now to dream until then.

Nice to meet everyone!

(I would do the wave but there is no edit bar at all in my posting box.)

(I'll wave for you!)

It sounds like you did the same thing I did....read a lot before getting the chickens. Good for you! I think it pays to be well-informed, though I continue to learn more every day from the wonderful people I've met here. I'm on a number of threads in the BYC and I have to say that this thread is one of my favorites.

On Christmas Morning, I was blessed with my 1st Blue Egg.... although it's more mint green than blue. So out of the 3, I now have 2 layers. 1 Ameraucanas and 1 RSL, the other RSL hasn't produced yet. It's small, but 1.8oz was a good size for a 1st I think. her last 3 were the same size too. The RSL is laying that size for 3 weeks now. largest one was only 1.9 oz. Boy, the Shells are hard. Went to crack it like a store egg and it didn't crack, so I cracked it again and it just made a dent in the egg, have to give them a good crack. So I guess I don't have to worry about their calcium. Then we moved the baby chicks outside. My GD had fun moving it with the quad. Filled the roost with straw and hung the light for night. Then we draped the sides because the wind was real cold that day. It's been 3 nights and they are doing fine. We hung a thermometer in the roost so while I'm inside I can see when it's time to turn on the light. Is there something you can feed them to have a richer color? Or is it just the way the chicken lays.
Very eggciting.. Yum..:goodpost:
