Arizona Chickens

Agh, you reminded me of my moringa from [@=/u/252618/Sill]@Sill[/@].. Just ran out and it is fine.. :celebrate

The other from [@=/u/56638/Gallo-del-Cielo]@Gallo del Cielo[/@] we will have to wait and see.. In order to transport from Tucson, it was cut to fit into my car. Hope it made it from last night freeze.. It was under a tree with running water.. No pipe's bursting here. Had them all on a trickle..

. Now that our van is done I will be able to put more plant's or chickens... :weee

Remember, even if the top of your moringa freezes it will come back from the roots once it warms up.  So don't throw it out if it does freeze!  Just make sure you got enough mulch over the pot so the roots don't freeze.  Moringa doesn't grow in winter, it just exists, but once the temps go up there is no stopping a moringa tree!  They grow super fast in the heat!

I cut my big one down to about 4 foot high before the real cold hit so I wouldn't loose the foliage for fodder.  It's all been dehydrated, powdered and put into a couple of jars to use mostly to top dress the birds' fermented feed a couple of times a week but I'll use some myself.  My DH remarked how that big tree's worth of leaves fit into two jars once it had been processed.  Takes up way less space!  I'm hoping it lasts until I can get more leaves in the spring.

The tree that was cut was under a tree and I had the water on a slow trickle, boy do I hope this one makes it.. the tree you gave me is inside. I got it just in the nick of time.. Has not lost any leaves this winter, but it also has not grown..
Oh and the fig tree cuttings has some roots, :woot.
I can't wait to share some of them with neighbors.. A few neighbors have nothing in their yard.. I will look for other varieties in the spring to propagate..
How's your oregano?

@Sill
What do these moringas look like and do you have any available? I take it the chickens like it? I am looking for plant ideas for in the run, I would like to make it prettier than bare dirt for them, but I don't know what to put in there that they wont just destroy.

Personally I got idea's from gallo, go to their page and look at their photo's.. Grapevine is a good one.. They will die back in the winter to allow for sun, plus once they are big enough they won't be able to eat all the foliage.. Use hardwire cloth with grass or the omega blend under it.. There are so many thing's you can do..
Once the seed box comes back around I bet there will be more moringa seed's in it... :thumbsup

Ugh, pipes froze last night. I live in Arizona cause it's supposed to be warm, darnit! :somad

Did they burst? Yeah, the desert is a mysterious place.. How is your flock? We only got down to maybe 32'.. The Banty hen raising the 5 is a bit small, so I brought in 3 of her chick's for a few nights. This way I get to hold them and not have to chase them around to try and catch one..although Clair, the mom, walk's right up to me.. Sometimes easy Pickens. Even the French Breese was tring to get under her mom, the jungle fowl.. She is almost as big as her mom.. So cute aren't they...

No snow here in Tempe, but lot's of great neighbors

No idiots or stupid people here either, just officers with nothing better to do then try and track down which houses are shooting fireworks. Wouldn't want a fire to start while it's RAINING. Makes as much sense as no burn days, speaking of which is it one today? If so I need to go get some meat to smoke for the next several hours.

I bet a neighbor called in and said it was gunfire.. Who know's. Most offices want to get a "bad guy" rather than wave their finger at a person for fireworks.. That boring.. One year we did fireworks in our backyard.. And a fire, probably on a no burn, we have potatoes wrapped in tin foil.. :highfive:
What wood do you use to smoke?

How cool! I am just waiting for the experience of naturally hatched chickss. I hope Arrowroot kept them warm last night!

Arrowroot did a good job keeping the two chicks and an egg warm through the night; 24°F was the low inside the coop. The NH chick was peeking out this morning before going back under the broody. This morning we moved her, the two chicks, and the remaining egg to a floor nest so that we don't have to worry about a chick falling out of the nest again. The move seems to be going well so far.

Nothing :lau Chickens destroy everything!

yes! darlings sure do, lol. :lau

You don't have to do it that way if you use an immersion blender. But all ingredients need to be at room temperature.

YES! We never buy store bought anymore. Don't like the oils (GMO) in store bought. We make ours with olive oil. And of course, fresh eggs!

I made a batch last night (the immersion blender method) that came out very tasty, and very thick. Maybe because I used blue eggs?
Here's a tip for those of you wanting to use olive oil in your mayo, don't use extra virgin oil, it will give your mayo a bitter taste. Strange but true.
Now I have to go check to see if I still have any New Years ham left over, if not, I'll have to find another excuse to eat some of that mayo!

YUM!!.... I'm going to have to learn how to make mayonnaise and I'm going to have to google immersion blender!

How's your oregano?

....my oregano, Thai basil, Italian basil, cinnamon basil and I think lemon basil appear to all be still amongst the living, thankful to Costco's frost covers for plants!.
