Arizona Chickens

Hi!
I have a problem. I have a 12 ft by 12 ft cage with no hen house (just a little dog house like thing), with 11 hens and I have 4 more that are about ready to go outside with the older ones. I just got a $50 gift card to Home Depot, and I am debating between building a regular hen house, or should I extend my cage.
PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR OPINION!!!!!!

You can extend the run, but be prepared to improve the housing within the next few weeks before the weather gets really hot. That many birds may overheat quickly in a dog house. Depends on how the dog house is designed, but most of the prefab ones I've seen have inadequate ventilation for summer chicken housing.

As others have said, shade is also critical. Tarps will help but they also cut down the air flow. Most shadecloth is not sufficient for mid-summer, mid-day shade. They really prefer dense shade. In the summer my free-ranging birds hang out under my deck, next to the house where the cool air conditioning leaks out.

When designing shade make sure you take the changing sun angles into account. I have better luck shading the top, west, and north sides - because in the summer the sun is farther north in the morning and afternoon, and is nearly overhead at noon.

Oh yes, the wild birds will love them too. Finch, lovebirds, and one other. I can't think of the name right now. Grape vines are fun. They died back in the winter and it gives the flock sun. There is so much you can grow, that is easy as well..

We get Elegant Trogons at my house too. Every now and then I wake up to find bird watchers parked in my driveway staring at the birds in my yard with their binoculars. It's a little creepy, actually.

I know what you mean when you have people checking out your property.. The duck's draw people walking by, IN... So far everyone has been very nice with lot's of questions.. They ask, " don't the duck's fly away? .. I tell them "No, they are highly trained duck's, we raised them from babies.." keeps them in wonder, :lau then I also let them know that Lauren gives us 1 egg a day, like the chickens do... They still are in shock, & most of the time speechless, actually quite entertaining, I might add..

No chick's this morning.. :idunno let's see what this evening brings.. She is getting chick's fron the Stock Shop later.. A few egg's were light, they will be taken out by day 23 if nothing happens..
Here is a duck egg and one from @moms3cuties leghorn.. Duck egg's have a richer yolk. Can not wait till our new flock start's laying..

Anyone in Tucson have Welsummer or any color Ameraucana fertile eggs available? I'm putting some of my eggs in the 'bator this weekend and I was looking to fill the thing up. Open to other breeds ...

You got a pair.. How cool... Thanks for posting up photos!! The hen look's like a pure breed.. ?:frow

Pretty!  Are they jungle fowl?

I think Dephane said they were Jungle Fowl/Silkie Mix.

They are gonna need a new home here pretty soon as we are making a big move and having no birds for a bit.

The family and I have decided to venture into tiny living and have purchased a 5th Wheel Travel Trailer that's why I haven't been posting on here very much. Amongst other things, this and my truck have kept me busy and not able to even think about anything else. BUT we are rent, car/truck payment free now and own our own Little home on wheels. I'm still trying to talk the DW into getting a few chickens once we get everything set up.

I kinda figured starting from chicks would be better because they would not know that moving around a lot is not common for chickens and keep laying all the time even when we move to a new site. Lol. What are your thoughts ? Is Bonnie back in town?
