Hope those are the right ones this time! Have you received the correct eggs from the other seller yet? I do hope they correct their error soon.
They are supposed to ship the correct eggs Tuesday as I told them I would not have a bator ava until then

I was wondering what the earliest age I can put chicks outside full time is? My Turkens are coming up on 5 weeks now and are stinking and dusting up my house so bad I matter how often I clean! Not to mention they are getting too big for the brooder and getting real antsy when in it! I have no way to heat the outside coop and it's not insulated. Thanks for any input

Hi everyone! I haven't posted in about 4 months since my business and the 5 kids have kept me busy. I have a free rooster, blue silkie (dad) and blue Andalusian (mom) cross. He is about 14 weeks now, was raised by my broody but is pretty mellow. He has 5 toes, black skin and the silkie Mohawk.
I currently have a no crow collar on him. Since we already have the silkie roo I'm not able to keep him. Any takers?

I have mine outside already they went outside at 4 weeks old. I just put my 3 week olds out there. For them I put a brooder ecoglow 50 in the corner of the coop in case they need it. It really depends on what your night temps are and how sheltered your coop area is

I've never kept chicks in the house beyond 5 weeks, even when it was cold at night. During the colder months I gradually got them used to being outside by extending how long they were out there each night. Now that it's warmer it's a much easier and quicker process since they can regulate their body temps without problem.

Good morning everyone. Been a long time since I have been on. Started a new job and adopted a beautiful baby boy so not a lot of extra time in the day. However I have noticed my RIR feathers are looking very ratty and not sure if something is wrong with her. Any help or advice would be great.

My old Production Red and Welsummer had feathers that looked similar to that right before a big molt. It was only on the largest feathers on the wings and the tail feathers but they really did look like a ratty mess and then all of those feathers dropped pretty much all at once a couple weeks later and they got nice pretty ones back in.

I put my chicks in an unheated coop/run as soon as they are mostly feathered out. With my birds (Black Javas) that is anywhere from 4-6 weeks old. I give them a lot of pine shavings to snuggle into because the nights are still chilly. The coop/run is partially enclosed on three sides, with hardware cloth screening all the openings including the entire south side. This year I moved the first birds out of the brooder at the end of January. When it got cold I got worried and put a heater out there for them. Shouldn't have bothered. They totally avoided it.

My birds do get some exposure to outside temps while still in their brooder. My brooder is outside and I leave its front and rear doors open (screened with hardware cloth) during the daytime. The chicks have a Sweeter Heater they can duck under that is tucked in a corner away from drafts. They also have an infrared heat lamp on a thermostat for colder days. The chicks spend a lot of time hanging out by the screened openings of the brooder during the day. This way they get exposed to outside temps. They also get introduced to the big chickens, who have free range time in the yard and always stop by the brooder area looking for tasty bits that might have spilled out through the screen.

Good luck with your Turkens. I would think they would be fine outside if they have back and head feathers. If they haven't had much outdoor time I'd put them out when it the forecast is for relatively mild temperatures for a few days.

This year I am trying to keep notes about who feathers slowly because I don't want to breed from those slower-feathering birds. I want them to move out of the brooder as quickly as possible.

Oh boy, I need a support group! I just put up my incubator and related items 3 days ago.
What did I do last night????? Bid on Phage's CCL eggs and WON!!
