I am so glad I found this thread! Anyone from the Gila Valley area? I have about 20 chickens and I have a duckling, and another coming out of it's shell right now, and i plan on getting into raising quail! I have to say that I am falling in love with my duck. Pretty darn cute! He/She is about 5 days old in this pic. Crossing my fingers that the other one makes it!

What breed of duck are they?? Keep us posted on your hatch!!

Hey guys i was hoping you guys can help me out with a question ive had learking in my brain...
so i have 20 hens and 2 roosters and 7 ducks all free range all day in my backyard its not acres but its a good size for a subdivision. Now if there getting fed organic feed and home bred mealworms and 90% of organic greens all the time can they be considered organic eggs there laying? Cause i dont know what kind of bugs there eatting on a daily bases in the yard except the ones i provide for them...
and is anything really 100% organic unless its being kept in a cage with no outside influences?

While you are not certified you can tell people you feed them organic feed and free range them on a pesticide and chemical free area.

Quail are great birds, very productive all summer when the chickens have cut back their production.

Yah thats what i was thinking to. Just was curious how it all worked. Cause i was going to sell some of my extra eggs i have and there fed organic feeds but also free range so if people asked ill just say that there organic fed. free range eggs Not certified

Really who need's all that extra junk anyway.. Sometimes I wonder why people add that caca to our food & our animal's. It does more harm than good.

What I tell the folks I sell my extra eggs to is that I do everything I can to keep it as natural as possible. I tell them about the organic feed I give to them, my organic gardening methods leading to additional greens for them, and the amount of space they have to roam around in a yard free of pesticides, etc. I often include a statement that I am not "officially" organic as I don't have certification, but that my lifestyle is geared in that direction. They can connect the dots on their own. Then again, most of the people sell eggs to already know how fanatical I am about our food as well as how I keep my chickens, so they're sold without me having to explain anything. 

I think once people see how easy it is to have even 3-4 chicken's or duck's their mind's start to go to a place that end's up being more than they bargain for!! Chicken math taks all of your normal reasoning away!!

It's funny when we tell people that our egg's are fertile they are like, . Or, I remind them they are better for you cholesterol ..

I'm with you on this point! And this is really the reason why I wanted to have a garden and at least my own poultry. "Organic" is a really simple concept and term that has been manipulated by the government and special interest groups representing big chemical companies to make it nearly impossible to legally obtain. In reality though, it's luckily pretty darn easy to be organic.

I am in the market for some pullets laying dark brown/chocolate-colored eggs.

I bought a pair of Cuckoo Marans from McMurray's Hatchery, but they lay brown eggs. We live in the East Valley.

Please message me if you have a Copper Maran (or other bird) for sale. A picture of the eggs she lays would also be appreciated. The darker, the better!

Our birds free range from sun-up to sun-down on our acre, are given natural feed, and enjoy hanging out by the mister on hot, summer days. They are spoiled and will go to a good home. Thank you!

1 of my chickens has a lame leg. Not sure how old she is, she was given to me. They said she was 10 months which would make her a year now. I've never seen her in the nest. Anyway, 1 leg is swollen and she limps. Is there anything, withing reason, I can do? or should I plan on the stewing pot? Don't want to see her suffer. She was fine yesterday.

I don't think so. It's the leg. You can tell it's swollen. Was just fine yesterday. There are no sores on the bottom of the foot. The area is really dry, no standing water at all.
