Questions for all the AZ chicken experts out there. I have two Production Reds and one Buff Orpington who are approaching 18/19 weeks now. I am new to chickens and they have not started laying. Does the AZ heat tend to stress them out enough that it might delay laying? I know they might be immature, but they are healthy and they have found a nice cool(ish...who are we kidding with that word), and I am just curious.

She was so pretty! I'm so sorry for your loss. Biels are such lovely birds. I know the heat has been really hard on mine too.

I am hoping that is all it was, but for some reason I don't think that was it.. She did have some stuff around her mouth.. When I went out this morning, the flock dd not come running like they do every morning, so I knew something was wrong.. Thank you..

So sorry for your loss of this sweet girl . Do you collect egg plates? - I have a number of them myself. Unfortunately I just knocked on of the vintage ones off the wall. One of my favorites of course!! Nice egg plate.

I collect duck's & chicken's... real one's.. Hehe, we do have a set that is hand painted.. When we have time I wil post them up.. & thank you.. Have you seen Ranger??

We have never had a chciken pass from the heat, however our biefielder does suffer.. She did pass today, but I don't think it was from the heat.. Her eyes were dilated [/quote]

Mites can kill a chicken pretty fast. Especially if the bird is already weak or stressed. I've been battling mites at my place for a couple of years now and haven't noticed any chickens with dilated eyes, so I suspect something else was going on with your bird.

I hardly ever see the mites themselves, even though I check the chickens several times a week in the evening when they are on their roosts. When I find evidence of mites - "dirty" belly feathers and patches of red skin - I treat the whole flock.  Wild birds are always getting into my coops/runs.  There is no way to keep them out when the chickens are free-ranging, and the chickens seem much healthier when they are let out.  So I check them frequently and treat for mites as needed. Okay, we'll then if that is how quick hey can go, I bet we will have more going.. Shoot, I have not had any experience with mites.. I'm so sad.
I did look as well, NOTHING.. One of our favorite hen's is over 3 year's old ..
I just brought in those new babies from Tucson, hope they make it.. I did go & look for mites going to the flock in their sleeping area, nothing.. I'll keep looking.. Thanks

It is the heat.. Are their comb's red?

I ordered Oxine.. Want to make sure I cover this problem. When @Sill & I did a necropsy on a hen her lung's had a weird look to them..

It is most likely the heat. Make sure that they always have water and shade. I have production reds and buff orpingtons, and I get about an egg every other day from my buff, but my reds aren't laying right now. It could also be that they are just too young to lay. All chickens begging to lay at different times.

I raise mostly different varieties of Orpingtons and they are one of the slowest breeds to start laying. My Chocolates are the earliest, starting to lay about 6 months old. Jubilees may be a year old before they start laying.

Yeah, the lungs look way too pale....and those dark streaks are strange. Something respiratory?

Then again, I've never examined the lungs of a chicken that had been dead for a while. I don't know how the blood settles and congealed once the bird has been dead for hours and hasn't been exsanguinated.

Yes, their combs are red.
