Arizona Chickens

No, no banties for me. I like the big eggs, and the Australorps are a dual purpose breed.

SOP means standard of perfection.
B/B/S means in the Black/Blue/Splash colors.

Oh! So are you breeding them for show or to sell to chicken show-ers? Or just as a personal goal to have beautiful hens and cockerels?

Haha yes I must admit bantams aren't my style either, I was just curious. I've always loved the large breed birds (with the exception of my Black Stars, although they definitely were not small, as spoiled as they were), which I suppose explains my mild obsession with emus and rheas. The more birds the merrier!

Went to the Tucson show yesterday. Total fail on getting information for any sellers. No one had the NN, Brown Leghorn, etc. I didn't see NN in the show either. I don't think I missed them. I think there were a couple barred rocks. A lot of seramas. Quite a few d'uccle. Several cochin...large & bantam. The show next month I guess they're expecting about a 1,000 or more. I'm thinking of going to it as well. Again, I'll be grabbing any seller information that I can.

Of course, next Friday is my day to go to the State Fair again...for the critter sales!!!! Hopefully they won't be sold out. I'm going to have to be very good about the chickens. I'm debating about another bunny as I'm worried my girl is missing her sister (they escaped my yard & the 1 never came back). Buns are social & tend to bond to another bun. They will become depressed, etc. similar to other animals & humans. Any rate.....let me know if you'd like seller information for any breeds. I know the NN, Brown Leghorn, & I think barred rocks were requested. Either way...I'll grab all I can.

Let's just put it this way- I think that I am getting too old to be showing them myself, but I want to breed the quality to the point that they could be shown by someone who would be into that. I also want to help to increase their numbers here in the USA on these colors and quality. My last 3 pullets that I bought cost me $50.00 each. You pay to get qualities.

Good luck! I hope that you find the ones that you are looking for!

that's a good idea, and show birds really are ridiculously expensive. What never ceases to amaze me is the cost of perfection. Good luck to you in your quest to find it, especially in such a large breed of chicken!

I actually made the incubator im putting them in and I definitely need to post pictures but it's a strange little contraption. I'm super paranoid about hatch rates, as my last batch's seller said they had only a 50-70% (which isn't that bad but it isn't great) due to human error. So, naturally, I decided there would be NO human error, and instead of paying $500 for a self-monitoring incubator or something crazy, what I do is use a rechargeable back heating-pad to help with muscle relief, you know? And I basically cut part that Velcro's and measured my waistline, added that amount of elastic, sewed it on, added a pouch to the large, heated zone, and then used a plastic bowl of a medium size to cap the top off, and then added a small capped container to the inside with holes in the top and used a very small, 1/2 in I think, hose I got from home depot and attach it to one of the holes in the life of the container, then extend it out through the cloth sack, as a waterline. I recently bought a new digital thermometer off Amazon for $12 that is also a hygrometer and i will be adding that when I adjust the size of the egg pouch.

This seems like a lot of work but when you pay $50 per emu egg it's better to be safe than sorry.. haha.

So you strap the back heater to your stomach before you put the eggs or water container in. Once you get it comfortable, add the water container and secure it to the sides of the pouch. Add a piece of fabric (I used an old T shirt that had become too small and had torn a bit) to the inside of the container. Add the water and some dummy eggs roughly the size of the eggs you plan to use, heat the belt up and wait. Fiddle with the heat setting and the amount of water you're using until you get the perfect amount, mark that amount on the container and keep it as constant as possible. Take the dummy eggs out and add the real eggs and start incubation. I use it attached to me so that in the case of the belt failing, my body heat would make up for it until I can go purchase another heat belt. It's pretty simple tbh and just sounds more complicated than it is. Keep it under a sweatshirt and use a thin, porous fabric to let the eggs breathe. You can chose to have a fan but you don't necessarily need one if you're moving around.

So, does this mean that you will basically be looking like a kangaroo with this thing on until they hatch?
:lau
LOL I think you'll end up looking like a kangaroo for a while!!;)

I had bought some from a breeder in Tucson, and I had a donation from another special byc gal and I tell you breeder qualities that are from Heritage breeds are awesome!! So indeed they are expensive but they're worth it if you want good quality and nice sized Birds, for sure!:D

Do you still have yours, and what breed were you going for? My three 6-month old Australorps are of the Rattlesnake Ridge Line, and my three 4 month old Australorp pullets are of the Hupp's Farm Line.

Quote: Lol we trailed each other at the show for bird pickup

I won 3 ribbons, got one disqualification , learned a buttload abut showmanship, and all around had a really good time.

It was totally rigged XD

just kidding, but it seemed that way because the superintendents kept winning, or people who know the superintendent. But I could assume that also means they are both skilled and experienced in the field because they hang around the shows alot more often.
