Arizona Chickens

I didn't enter anything because I couldn't be there for coop-in. I hope to get there for a while on Saturday but I am working this weekend so can't stay long.
Wish I could attend today.... but unfortunately we are landscaping our backyard today with the technical stuff: Gas line, trench digging, tractor work, leveling, fun stuf -_-

if anyone takes photos I would love to see!!

There appeared to be fewer large fowl entries this year than in years past at the poultry show, but I think there may have been more breeds represented than in years past. I was very tempted by one lovely White Rock pullet and a whole pen of Muscovy, but managed to leave the show with my wallet intact.

I may try to make next year my first year of showing. There were no Naked Neck Turkens and no Silver Grey Dorkings, so I may have to give these lovely breeds some recognition. Live is such an adventure!

There were a few very nice Australorps there, but not as many as I usually see. As far as showing is concerned, I honestly don't have a clue how to go about this yet but I've bookmarked a few pages on the topic and have a year to figure out what to do.

You're welcome! I had others give me eggs when mine weren't laying. I'm just glad I'm still getting eggs at this time of year. No duck eggs but the pullets are starting to lay and some of the older girls are laying.

Did you see any crevecoeur?

You should show! I think you just need to fill out the entry form & show up. Well, that & have a bird. Past that the best I've been able to figure is trying to meet the SOP.

Oh, did you see the movie Chicken People? It's a documentary that follows a couple of people for a year who show birds.

It was a nice show. We were there around 11:00 to about 2:30. You're right about the NN's; I was disappointed there weren't any there too. I think I'm going to try to locate a breeder and find some SOP birds to get a line going. My hatchery NN's are coming along really fine and are the focus of attention whenever I show my setup to anyone. You're right - they are beautiful the more you look at 'em. They really grow on you.

On a side note, I don't know if you have or not, but I joined the Tucson Pigeon, Poultry, and Fancy Fowl club, and they'll supply you with all the info you'll need to set up and show any of your birds. You'll get newsletters with all the latest on upcoming events so that'll keep you in the loop. Just something to think about if you haven't joined already.

I didn't think we'd buy anything there but I ended up buying a pair of Buff Orpingtons that one of the breeders had for sale. I've always liked them but they weren't at the top of my list for breeding due to breeding chicken real estate shortage - you never have enough it seems. Anyway my wife Elma was really enamored with them so we bought a single pair to get started. She named them Charles and Carolyn from Little House on the Prairie. So I'll have to get busy on the next multi-pen coop as soon as I finish the runs on this last one. It's a lot of work but that's ok, it's all for a good cause.

Oh....my...gosh! We were there at the same time, and I think we were right there when you were buying those birds! I didn't know what you looked like, but my husband and I were walking about the large bird pens when I think the breeder was talking to you about his birds, and then he pulled a couple out and stuffed them in a pet carrier. Dang it! I wish I'd known it was you! And they were really beautiful Buff Orps! (My hair is now long and straight...and gray...and my husband is bald....just in case you saw us.)
