Arizona Chickens

Wonder if human urine would scare them off.

SAME!! I would sit on the back porch in sub zero with my rifle and a cup of cocoa just to protect my sweet birds!

im tempted to start shoothing anything in the yard that isn;t my dog or my chickens because i tell you what those javelina are about to pi** me off for the last time -_-

they are trying to dig into my coop!

I have a dog and even he has his own fenced in section in front of the house. The chickens are in the back section of the yard where I can watch them out of the sliding glass door. We have a light on all night by the shed that helps me to see any movement out there. We have no climb wire secured to horse railings on the sides and top of the attached run, and on the sides the no climb extends well below the ground. The top of the run is then covered by wood over the top near the coop. I added some sun screen at the farthest end away from the coop in the summer to help from the sun, and in summer add the misters over there. That way it won't get the coop wet. The coop also has no climb wire attached to the bottom of it, going well below ground.

The only things that I see over here that could be a danger to mine would be dogs running loose in the neighborhood, or coyotes when they run through. Neighborhood cats aren't much interested in my adult chickens, as they are standard sized, and too big for them, I guess. I walk around my chicken section daily, and I have never seen when anything has tried to dig in.

I have a variety of breeds since my flock is divided into pures, egg layers and meat birds, but my primary focus is the Naked Neck Turken. I've found them to be the perfect breed out here as they are exceptionally heat tolerant, very feed efficient, have outstanding temperaments, and are very easy to breed for specific traits. I've divided my NNs into egg layers, which average 5-6 large to jumbo eggs each per week and some of my birds lay blue to green as well as pink eggs;

Hi DesertChic.

Did you ger your NNs lically or mail order?

We are setting up a new coop and based on what I've read I'm pretty this is the breed we want.

Thanks much!

My original flock came from hatching eggs purchased from a breeder who has since sold off her stock. That was two years ago. Since then I've simply been working on improving my own flock.

Hey, is anyone here in Arizona joining in on that BYC 2017 New Years Day Hatch-a-long? I was thinking of joining in, but I haven't made up my mind yet. If I do, the chicks will be the Blues and Splash Australorps this time, as my Splash hen is now putting out good sized eggs now.
