Arizona Chickens

I have a question, and wonder if anyone else here has had the experience to enlighten me. Ok, I live in the valley, and will be hatching out my chicks. A person who wants some of my chicks lives up in the mountains where it is colder. They will be picking up the chicks. What could be put into the box with the new chicks to keep them warm enough for like the say 3 to 4 hours drive back to the persons home?
I'd use a box that was just big enough to fit the chicks in so they could keep each other warm till they get where they're going. That's what the hatcheries do with mail order chicks so I'd assume it'll work in your case. I don't know the minimum number of chicks you'll need to generate the correct amount of heat but if it'll only be for a couple of hours drive I'd guess you'd be ok with something like 8-10. I'd also tell the person getting them to keep the heat in the vehicle as high as they could and still be comfortable for the drive home. I think between those two things, packing them tight and keeping the interior warm, they'll be just fine.

... or you could get one of those hand-warmers that you squeeze and it chemically warms a pouch..

a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel it will hold heat for a while as well.

If the chicks are in a relatively small box they can keep each other warm. If the car is a comfortable temperature for you, I wouldn't worry about it at all. You are going to cause more trouble if you put an artificial heat source in with them because they won't be able to get away if they are too hot. Heat will kill them faster than cold will.

When I got my shipment of chicks a few years ago, they arrived in mid-January in the middle of the coldest freeze we've had in a long time. The chicks were fine. Even though they went from Minnesota to Tucson in January and arrived here while the days were barely into the 40's and the nights were in the mid-low teens.

Ok, thank you! She told me that she has a small box that would fit all 6 chicks into it after they hatch out.
