Arizona Chickens

I've seen quite a few people on here using the fans, so no way! I'd use 'em, too, if my chickens didn't like to stick their heads in everything. Thank goodness it's almost time for cooler weather.

I haven't had chickens for probably about 30 years so I'm really learning again. But I got these at 5 days old and had them in the house so they are my messy kids. We felt horrible when they were all panting so my husband built box's to put fans in that are messy kids safe lol

Hi everyone! I'm in Page Az. (Lake Powell) I have Wyandotte's, blues,Columbians, barred rocks , Rhode islands and a white crested blue polish hen. We get pretty hot to , I feel a little silly we set up caged fans so they can't touch them but enjoy the fans. A bit much?

Not at all silly! (Says the woman who has two window A/C units in her chicken cabin. )

Hello Arizona chickeners. I am chickening in St. Johns Arizona. I have a flock of 11 ladies and I just found out today....one gent that was supposed to be a pullet. We have 40 acres of the most beautiful high desert, but the beauty comes at a price. Hawks, coyotes and foxes keep trying to end my chicken journey. The worse critter (in my opinion) is rattlesnakes. I know they are just making a living from all the pack rats but they freak me out. My gals don't like them either. Any other St. Johnsians out there?

I may have an answer to your dilemma. Consider hosting some of these children for their SUMMER VACATION..... Your snake problem would be under control quick.

Using fans without the caged protection gives the following results. EACH CHICKEN GETS TO PRACTICE CURIOSITY PUTTING HEAD IN ONLY ONCE.

Nope - not at all. I'm even researching making a type of solar cooler thingee to put under their shade and in their coop at nights. Think bucket with liner (Home Depot has them) put in a few PVC pipes out the bottom or side (can't decide) top with a fan that is solar operated. I'm still thinking it through - I know its been done a number of time but even looking at pictures etc leaves me unsure. I'm kinda a hands on learner thus I make a few mistakes before I get it like I want it - or right

Now for a little story about what I did this month. Remember I mentioned about my next door neighbor's chickens being killed by dogs earlier this month? Well, I had taken the last 2 white eggs that had been laid by the 2 white leghorns that they had and put them into my incubator. The roosters they had were the 2 Australorp's that they had bought from me. Anyways, one of the eggs started pipping at the wrong end today, so I have had to assist it. It looks to have nice colored spots on it, so the Blue Rooster had to have been the daddy. If the Splash rooster was the daddy, the spots wouldn't be as dark. This chick is what the hatcheries are calling them Austra-White's (Black Australop roo over White Leghorn hen). My Australorp's are not hatchery stock, though. I hope that the other Leghorn egg hatches out too. I guess that I need another small pen for them so I can grow them out and observe. They are supposed to lay eggs well and be heat tolerant, but be a bit smaller then my Australorp's are. I guess that this has become my project bird?

So sorry for your neighbor , but yay for the new chick hatching! Good luck with 'em! They sound like they'll be adorable! But then again, I suppose all chickens are.

I adore my little black Australorp...she has a quirky personality and makes a different sound from my other breeds, kind of a funny little trill noise, when I pick her up! I would love to see how your hatchlings grow. What a fun project. That would be awesome to tailor-breed for good laying qualities as well as heat tolerance.
