Arizona Chickens

Hi all :)

My poor flock doesn't know what to do. Had to change feeders because of the damn pigeons, there's strange little fuzzy things peeping inside another coop, we had a rat get into the big coop and they lost their flock leader in the spring plus another established member over the weekend.

Fugly didn't crow for three days and all the girls quit laying.

I don't think the flock just moves on when a member passes. Chicks are one thing, but established members are a different story. I think they mourn the loss.

I was so happy to hear the escort call and hear Fugly crow this morning I almost cried, my eyes welled with tears, seriously. I'm a goof I guess, but I do love my birds.

The rooster I had that hatched from a blue egg I was trying to breed with the Ameraucana, along with some other hens, for NN/EE's. He died unexpectedly, so I grabbed all the fresh eggs from the hens that were with him to hatch while the hens still had his "gizz" in them. Three of the Ameraucana eggs hatched. So these three are the only offspring i have from him.

Ok. I remember that you had mentioned before about a rooster had died so you had grabbed egg's. Did you save a cockerel to breed to your blue egg laying hen?

Sorry that you lost a couple of your chicken's! :hugs I hope that you got the rat problem solved.

Ruby was in Spring but we put down one girl here that was eating eggs. Thanks :hugs

Now I've found another broken egg and a pigeon in there damn it :he

Some of the smaller doves used to be able to get into my run and coop until I added some chicken wire over the top of the other wire of the run that connect's to the coop. They can no longer fit through the holes. How are your new chick's doing over there? Mine are growing like weed's. My new pullet that has been laying gave me a double yolker a few day's ago. I have 2 more pullet's that should start laying pretty soon, too. I have already seen Charley starting to be nicer to them with the tidbit-ting.

Edit: And the black eyed hen that you liked is still trying to hatch out her 3 plastic egg's that I gave her.

Was he the Blue boy? I hope not!
No Blue is fine. :) He is a Bresse cross. The one I lost was a cross from Remmy and a blue egg laying Nn hen I had gotten from Bluebaby a couple years ago. I was hoping he inherited the blue egg gene and that i could get more blue egg laying Nn's by crossing him with my Ameraucana. I suspect 2 out of three of these chicks may be cockerels though.....

The chicks are growing like weeds here too. I'm thinking some time in the yard will be in order this weekend. I'm so glad we built the mini coop, trying to make a spot in the big one would have been worthless. Far too small a space.

What a bummer though. I'm sorry you lost him! I was thinking about asking for some eggs from your Ameraucana this fall. I'm thinking about selling eggs for eating and people like color variety it seems.

I have a chick here that was white at hatch but has some blue coloring in him now. Pretty sure it's a roo, bigger that the rest and his comb is getting pretty big. I think the brown one is a roo too for the same reason.

I have Blue in there now. A half Bresse boy that I originally wasn't going to breed because he's small, but he filled out nicely making me think he'll still make meaty table birds, so I put him in with the Ameraucana and the Jersey Giant/NN cross hens, along with a couple nearly clean necked partridge hens. Offspring from him and the Ameraucana should lay mint green eggs. I thought I had posted something about this not too long ago... He's a rough mounter though, and I'm about to have to put Hen Saver saddles on some of his girls because of it.

This is the boy I lost that hatched from the blue egg. I would have gotten all NN offspring from him no matter what hen I put him with because he carried two copies of the NN gene, and an increased chance of daughters that lay blue eggs because he was possibly carrying a copy of the blue egg gene. I never came up with a name for him....

I still have my blue egg CCLB hen, plus her NN daughter that lay's the light green egg's. During my last hatch last month, I had a couple of blue and green egg's that hatched, and Charley is the daddy to them all. Charley isn't too rough with the girl's. I've been starting to watch for the comb size now on the chick's to see who the boy's are.

I won't be hatching anymore of my NN's until I get a new roo for the hen's.

I just keep a pellet gun happy. I haven't had a dove in my coop in months. If a dove lands, the hens run it off. I think they will kill it if they could catch it. No pigeons thank goodness. I trapped about 6 or 7 rats and haven't had any back for a couple of months now.
