Day 2 the four baby chicks seem to be doing well. I have watched them feed and drink the. Come back to surrogate mom. I will take some pics tomorrow.

They are currently with broody mama who is in one of three nestboxes in the coop.

one of the adult easter eggers came close and even drank/ate their food but zero aggression so far.

@igorsMistress , if you keep breeding them where they will have less and less feathers will you eventually end up with naked chickens? I'd be worried about sun burn and would be chasing them around the run with sunscreen.

Haha! No. The naked neck gene is an imcomplete dominant gene. I made a breeding post about it on the Naked Necks Anyone? thread. It's no different than the blue feathering gene... they can get one copy of it or two. There are some less understood modifier genes that can have a small affect on it, like the pea comb gene, but otherwise they stop at two copies of the gene and clean neck, like igormistress's chicks show. And their skin does just fine in the sun.

On the plus side, these little punks are out there running around and I can't help but smile. I do believe this little one in the front is a slow feathering type chick and it's awfully roosterish acting.

He most definitely looks like a little punk boy!!!

With the right flock, letting broody hens raise chicks can be very rewarding to watch. My most recent broody took her newest chicks out for their first excursion outside the coop this morning and I watched as the rooster walked up and started tidbitting to the chicks the same way he does to his hens. He's such a good boy, it warmed my heart.

I keep reading posts here about how they are trying to breed out this and that from them.. was sitting here thinking eventually you are going to end up with a naked chicken.. they'd look like those hair-less cats.

Haha! No there are other genes that can lead to a completely naked chicken but they have to be combined with the naked neck gene. There is a "scaleless" gene that does that... And it even causes them to have no scales on their legs! I honestly think thats going too far and borders on animal cruelty, unless you keep them inside like hairless cats...

Agreed, I like the clean neck look that Fugs had but the naked chickens...no thanks.

Just the necks starri, as in no bow ties or bibs. Fugly looked a lot like that little guy I posted a pic of when he was little but his chest and his bare little booty filled in as he grew up.

@igorsMistress so sorry to hear about your flock but I do think you did the right thing. It’s hard to watch your animals suffer and it could have spread. RIP Fugly & friends
