Yep, you'll need a separate pen. And hens can hold sperm for anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months, so you'll want to pen off the ones you want to breed at least a month ahead of time before collecting fertile eggs.

That's one of the reasons I don't want to be hatching out of my main flock right now, I don't want to continue the mean gene in them.

Hello everyone; unfortunately one of our d’uccle bantam roosters has passed away. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about his death. He was about four months old and seemed to be perfectly fine yesterday night when we changed their food and water. I did realize that about two weeks ago he completely stopped crowing and a couple family friends think that might’ve signified something wrong, his stomach looked almost completely rotted away despite being dead for at most a couple of hours, any ideas?

@cactusrota I gave my DIL 3 of the pullets I hatched from you last night. 2 were all black so I'm assuming they came from a JG mix. They are HEAVY! I couldn't feel their keel bone, nice full breasts. I was always amazed by how heavy they were because they didn't look it.

One was the bottom of the pecking order and the girls I kept were mean to her. She is super sweet so I'm hoping she'll blossom over there.

We were late getting out to the coop to collect eggs today and the chickens had already roosted. My husband opened the nest box to retrieve the eggs and jumped back in surprise...apparently Lady the white leghorn has been sleeping in the nest box! She’s not broody, just much more comfortable there than on the roost with the others Silly hen. She woke up and jumped out, walked around for a bit, then hopped back in and went back to sleep. Maybe that’s her way of making sure she gets the preferred box to lay in when morning comes.

I don't know what was going on with the electric here this morning, but it went out at about 10:40. I had to run and get a towel to throw over the top of the incubator to help to hold the heat in. It's all back on now, as you can tell by me being back online again.
