Arizona Chickens

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve last logged in but I was wondering if anyone else is seeing all the rain that’s been happening these past few days, at around four or five in the afternoon we even had hail which I haven’t seen in years  and with all of the coronavirus panic this is all starting to seem so unreal:p we’ve made sure to stay stocked with water and hopefully with the chickens we’re sure to have eggs for days:lau any special precautions you guys are taking? Xx

Actually over here we still had a little bit of stuff built up that we bought when it was on sale but still had good dates on the can's. We just rotate the can's here on our shelves like they do in the stores, so that the older stuff get's used up first. We also buy some meat's when they are at a good price, and freeze them in the deep freezer. A couple of week's ago, the bag's of frozen cooked shrimp was on sale. The limit on those was 2 bag's, so my DH got 2, and so did I.

Stocking up like this came in handy when I was just a child. My step-dad got hit by a car trying to be a good samaritan. He had stopped to remove a box out of the road and ended up with a car hitting him. It broke one of his leg's and threw him though the windshield. He had to have 103 stitches in his head, and was still picking out pieces of glass for month's. He got time off from his job, but we couldn't get any welfare assistance help, because he had made too much money the year before. If it wouldn't have been for having a good stock of canned good's and such already on hand, I'm not sure how thing's would have turned out until he went back to work. Alway's be prepared, because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Very well said. Life teaches lessons, that's for sure. We lived in CA for many years. We always had a full pantry of canned goods and water that we rotated through just as you describe.

Up near Mayer, we had a lot of rain, more than I've seen, because it was over a longer period of time. I have clay soil, rock and caliche, and I actually almost got my car stuck in the mud in the driveway outside my fence. The local dollar store still has things like zinc lozenges and even toilet paper. Traffic at I-17 and the truck stop area looks much slower than you'd expect for a spring weekend. And, my andalusian pullets have been out kicking in the mud puddles! and generally foraging during all the wet weather. I guess Spanish chickens can adapt to swampy conditions.

Back to the COVID, both my family caregiver groups got cancelled. Just as well, as the day before they issued a list of cautions including washing your hands after using kleenex. That sounds wise from a disease standpoint, but imagine someone shares a sad story with the group, then everyone gets up and leaves to wash their hands in the midle of her story!

I've been hearing on the new's that some of the people that have been buying out the tiolet paper, hand sanitizer's, and those mask's were trying to resell them on Amazon and E-Bay and price gouging them. Greedy people trying to benefit by making extra bucks off the back's of other's. Do they really have to sell thing's at 4 to 5 time's the normal cost?

I’ve seen on the news that almost all the school districts in the area are closing until April!

we went to tractor supply for some dog and chicken food and even that is starting to sell out! Most of our local school districts are closing until April and a few cousins of mine even had their jobs close down and go entirely online  it’s a shame some are trying to benefit off of worry when there are some who can barely afford necessities at their regular price :(

Someone just told me that the Casino's are planning to shut door's on Monday. I'll have to ask one of my next door neighbor's that work's at the one here in Maricopa to see if they are.

It's getting crazy. Chewy had a delay in shipping our dog food. I haven't been in a store in a couple of days but I'll have to go for a few things tomorrow. Think I'll be there when they open. The boys are on Spring break next week but there are rumors that the district will clise the schools and announce it next week. They don't have to deal with parents then, convenient I suppose.

I heard that school's were going to shut down.

Oh, and be careful in the store's. People might start fighting each other to get the stuff they want. It could be like it is during those Black Friday thing's.

We went to Walmart to do our weekly shopping and the shelves were bare. We then went to a small town local store called weis markets and found some toilet paper that we actually needed. I’m going to stop at tractor supply and get some chicken food. I have two weeks until I have eggs hatching. Hubby started building me my grow out pen we are going to put in the garage. It’s pretty big. Going to look at the dog kennel that came with the property and convert that into a coop also. Someone I work with wants to give me a buff Orpington rooster to be the protector of my egg layers. I have one buff Orpington pullet and a Easter Egger a pairie bluebell, a polish, a emerald Egger 2 silver laced Wyandotte’s and another Egger type. Next week I’m gettin 2 calico princesses then I think I’ll be done for this year except for my silkies.
Weather has been wonderful here.

My Blue Laced Red Wyandotte hatching egg's are supposed to ship to me on the 23rd, so I hope that the Post Office hasn't shut down by then.
