Arizona Chickens

Good morning everyone...
Well, that did not take long. Larry has found a new flock, she is coming in Friday. I am so happy as she was looking for new & better lines. Those Plymouth barred rocks all seem to be hens & one of the other

girls left a really dark blue egg. I know they start out dark but this was a beautiful egg. Photo for fun.

Is everyone ready for the polar vortex?? Jk.. 🌞 i think the clover seeds should be arriving tomorrow! 🍀🍀

Had a cute day with my little splash cochin. She just keeps jumping up until i pick her up, then she wants to sit on my shoulder. She is 19 weeks now and there is lots more red showing up on her face. Still sweet and is finally interested in hanging with the D'uccles.

It‘s never boring on our small city farm. Yesterday or really 2 days ago I noticed one of my aloha chickens was limping. So I picked her up and checked her feet for bumble foot, nothing, it could be an ankle or hip issue.
Yesterday she was barely moving & limping even more. So I pick her up and figure she is egg bound, poor girl. And of course I have her in my arms & 2 other things have be happening as I am carrying her around as the water is warming up water with Epson salt. Made a private hotel room for her to dry off & rest. Gave her a small handful of cheese & fresh spinach. I always have oyster shell out for them, so who knows.. Go out a few hours later, there’s the egg, whooo-hooot. She is still slow but walking better. Anyone else have a certain hen & does this issue persist?

@City farm Glad that you found the boy a new home to go to so fast. Have you figured out what one layed that blue egg?
No, only 2 eggs so far & the teens are looking in and about the nest boxes. One of the barred Plymouth rocks just started laying a medium brown egg. I made another more private hotel above the 4 plex (old cupboard) covered it with a old plastic tablecloth but want to put up curtains, yep fancy curtains, once they get dirty I’ll wash or toss. I have some that are pink & I don’t like pink, so it’s a perfect use. I will hopefully get it done today & post up a photo.

Chicken's can be funny. Just wait until you get one that want's to lay an egg and she think's that up on your shoulder is a good place to do it at.

I wouldn't doubt it with these guys. I need to record Daisy screaming at me.. i have a hunch she invented her own chicken language to order me around with. It's like she is pausing her squawks.. makes it sound like a little kid tantrum. I have a coop cam to setup and 😂

Good afternoon AZ. I hope you’re all well and your flocks too. Hubs is home this week because of covid at the school, the ducklings are in the duck house with the older ducks safe and sound and running about with a bit of attitude already. It’s beautiful outside! Much nicer than expected per the news earlier this week anyway. I moved my veggie starts outside to harden off but the temps are going to be so nice I think I might just transplant them this weekend. I got some duck weed to grow for the ducks so I got that started today. Pretty simple, three gallons of poopy pool water in an opaque bin and dump the plants in. Not much else happening here. I need to go give the babies fresh water. Have a great afternoon!

If you live in a part of AZ where the ground is sand, rocks, and caliche (see pic below; not my yard but you get the idea), do use mulch in your chicken coop/run? If so, why and what kind? I keep hearing mulch is good for hens but not why it's good for them. Is it something we need to add if their run is just desert sand/dirt?
