Arizona Chickens

Those just kill the ones that touch/eat it.. the amdro is carried back to the nest, and isn't active until they chew it up to feed their babies and queen.. and then it begins to cover the tunnels where the rest of the lot dies! Then, the distress call is made and the rest come back to help!! 💀💀💀
I've gotten the amdro at home depot. It comes in sprinkle/pour containers, and bait stations that you could pin down in the yard. You could DIY a bait station out of a tupperware container to make it tamper proof for your chickens. It's been a while, but I had read that the main ingredient in amdro is not poisonous to ducks so that made it a better idea for me at the time.

I just make little piles along their trail, about teaspoon size.. they carry it off so fast, there is nothing left behind for birds etc to even get! It must taste great! 🤣

If you could only figure out a way to harness them, and put them to WORK :gig

We don't have any fire ants in our area, but there are other varieties still present. Non-biting, but still unwanted, and this is what we use inside home.

There is a home-made version that can be made from a mix of the Borax, and Powdered sugar.

The way this works on ants;; Ants eat the mixture. :drool:drool:drool, The borax causes Gastro-intestinal air to develop. (AKA as fart:gig) Ants cant fart, so they pop.

This will not work so well if it gets rained on, washed down, but works well when dry. I mostly use it indoors, but have placed it outside. We get rain often, so it does get washed away often.

Some of the readers here know I have a Slightly Silly/Funny Side:old:gig.. When I sprinkle some of the borax, I say, "TAKE SOME OF IT BACK TO YOUR LEADER":lau

Then I sometimes hummmmm this melody to myself:old:idunno
I have sprinkled Borax under my sink, never mixed it with powdered sugar, good idea!

Water for some misters is nice for a desert garden. Some love birds are ear-splitting loud! They make roosters pale by comparison, but are accepted as "pets"! Cockatiels are my favorite small parrot, well adapted to the desert, too. A little electricity to run a tiny 7 watt bird heater for them is all you would need for such a setup. Quail would not need any heat after they were grown. Some hatcheries sell Valley Quail in season, which would be about now! If you look at all the hatching threads, quail are popular to hatch.

I used to have a Nanday Conure. Talk about loud!!! And a neighbor had an Amazon parrot.

Happy day--Whisper laid a bloody egg a while back (her first egg), then laid one or 2 more eggs and quit. I was starting to worry that she might be egg bound, but she laid a full sized one today, not like the little ones she laid before. The other two lay an egg every day.

I've never had a hen lay 2 egg's in one day.
Then somebody did a good job of hiding it! I found 2 eggs yesterday and 4 today, so Whisper must have laid today's fourth one yesterday.

Hidden eggs might be how I ended up with embryos in the eggs back when that guy gave me those eggs at the swap meet.

Tomorrow the eggs in the incubator are supposed to go into lockdown, but yesterday when I candled it was obvious none of them made it. Might as well do it anyway for practice. I'm not too happy--that makes for two tries at incubating and no chicks. :hit

Update on the injured barred pullet---I've been letting her spend more time with the flock during the day as "physical therapy" and she is improving. She still has a limp, if I catch her on a roost or object I grab her and put her back in her hospital pen. Since she spends so much time outside the 4x5 hospital wing, I think her quality of life isn't so bad. The andalusian is starting to blend into the flock of pullets too. She sleeps next to one of them. She blends in with the flock during the day also, but she's still stressed (had some loose poo) and I believe she has leg mites. It was just murder to catch her to spray her legs! I've got brewer's yeast with garlic on order to add to their feed, since I'm so bad at catching them! I didn't give them treats as babies, I just talked to them. So they're not absolutely wild, just not so tame as to be readily catchable. Things to do differently next time....
You might try plucking her off the roost after dark to check her over and treat any issues she has.. It will cause her some stress but nothing like being chased in my experience. I’m not a cuddler but I do handle my birds regularly for inspection. I use a headlamp that I can clip on a ball cap but I’ve also brought them inside in good light if necessary.

I'm definitely going to have to review the videos on that. One time I tried to rig up a flashlight to my glasses but I can see I'd need a head-mounted light.
