I have another one similar to it, but with a red plastic trough that goes around it to hold water. This one is probably best used for feed, but there's less area for the chick to drown itself.

Yes, that one in the picture is good for the chick feed. My chick waterer is a green one that has the little trough around it. I fill it with water that has vitamin's and electrolytes mixed in.

It should, just follow the instructions on how to mix it for chick's.

I just checked the incubator and 2 of the 5 egg's have a tiny break in them now. The breaks are where they should be at.

I just had to add water, and candled again for the last time. Three Leghorn eggs are completely dark, and one Dorking egg is about 3/4 of the way dark. Two eggs have blood rings and are about 1/2 dark. Looks like 3-4 chicks at this point.

I've been reading about how easily newly hatched chicks can drown themselves. What's the safest way to provide water for them?

Sounds like 2 little Exchequer Leghorns would be a great fit with a small hatch!

I use the red one with a jar for water, no jar for food when they are tiny. Tiny ones can go right inside the holes on the feeder. The second week they get a jar of food on that metal feeder. I hope you can tell from the photo, I was not aiming at the food and water!

The 2 are from my lighter red NN girl, and the Aloha cockerel that was over her. My plan's are to keep any NN females that hatch and then breed them to the NN Aloha cockerel when they are old enough.

What about the males? How soon can you pick out the males on the Aloha color? I really like the light males on these Welbars I got by chance. Looks like I got 2 male and 2 female, time will tell.

I won't be keeping any males from my red NN (ok, that's it, she's going to get a name now... Ruby). As far as being able to tell the sex of them, it will be the same as any other single combed breed. This first batch out of Ruby will look mostly like her in feather color, but could carry the molting gene from the Aloha's. If so, then if they were to be bred back to an Aloha, the molting could show up in the 2nd generation.

The one egg that started zipping fast, the chick is out now but is wet.

Does anyone know if @Geckolady is ok? She's too quiet this morning, and I know that she mentioned a fire up there near her?
