Which pads do you use? I was looking at these because they seem soft and can be washed and reused. A friend of mine scoffed and said she just uses old t-shirts (?).

I bought 2 of that type before, The hen's didn't want to use them, and layed the egg's in the corner in the dirt instead. This is the one's that I just bought. I like them because I can take off the paper backing and break it up to cover my larger sized nest boxes.

They remind me of swamp cooler pads/filters, probably they're a lot softer though.

I don't know if the material from those are the same or not as I don't have a swamp cooler. I'm going to see how they do with these today out there though. When I checked earlier they had not tried to kick it out of the boxes.

Update: I just went out there to peak in on them and found one hen in each of the nesting boxes acting like they are ready to lay an egg in them!

I did some googling. Both the nest pads and similar looking cooler pads are made of aspen excelsior (shredded wood). As for softness? I would have to compare side by side.
I wonder if there's a price difference, plus I'm assuming that the nest pads would be approved for food contact and I wouldn't think the swamp cooler pads would need to be.

@BlueBaby, what is the benefit of the nest pads? Do they keep the birds cooler, less dusty than shavings, etc? Help prevent broodiness??

They are said to keep the nest's cleaner, and to help to pull away moisture. I've never used shaving's, When I used hay before, they just kicked that out of the box too. These pad's don't look like there's anything to be dusty in them, and when I pulled them apart yesterday, none broke off into dust.
