Arizona Chickens

Thank you all so much for the wonderful comments. For those that don't know what a Cinnamon Queen is it is a version of Red Sex Link. If I am not mistaken they are created using a Rhode Island Red roo and a Delaware hen. I don't have the best camera in the world so please forgive the cruddy photo but here ya go. The red and white birds in the picture are cinnamon queens at 3 months old.

I looked up the Superstition Farms web site, that someone posted. I know their family.

I can't wait to visit the farm again after all these years, and see all the changes. Hoots! for them.

Hi Everyone!
I haven't given an update in a while I know!

I've been too busy with my new little herd of nigi dwarf goats!

Here are a couple of pics.

And here's that same little wether after I caught him using his horns against my other disbudded wether.

Yep, he got the tennis ball treatment.

Also, just an update on Quackie. He was our little crested mallard that we got at one day old.

It was pretty obvious after about one week that he was having neurological issues. He didn't walk right and even while standing, kinda hung out on his "heels" instead of up on his feet. Anytime he shook off he would fall over backward. I had a feeling that at some point he wouldn't be able to turn himself back over.

that's what happened yesterday in the heat.

RIP Quackie. We loved your cutie pie little head and wiggly butt.

All of your baby's are so cute. Don't you just love Baby's?

My girl's have started laying all their egg's in The Loft, they made 4 places but lay all the egg's in the same nest.

I had to replace the nozzles in my mist system. Walmart doesn't carry misters nor replacement parts any more. lowe's only had caps. I found them at an irrigation store on Jackrabbit Trail South of I-10. $2.00 each.

I got them all set up and running. My girls love the mister's My girls are the snake killing champs. One was in the pen,

they were on it, pecked it, killed it and ate it in 5 min. That included chasing each other to get it away from each other. It was about 10" long and as big as my index finger, a baby Sidewinder rattle snake. I was in the pen with garden flip flops on. I will never do that again. At the same time that was going on I moved the tray under the feeder and out came a Large scorpion, as the girls were running by they spotted it and had that bad boy gone in seconds. They are some Hunters.

I feel protected in the pen.

Pati ~ Cinnamon Queens lay big brown eggs and a lot of them (6-7 eggs a week). As for friendliness, I think they are super birds. I have two in my personal flock named Lucy and Ethel (after I love lucy) and every morning they come to the door for me to pick them up. Just so you know I have very few of the 4/27 batch left and I am getting ready to order 100 more of them. I can't keep them when I have them because everyone around here is starting to figure out how good of layers they are.

arizonanessa-

I saw you were out in glendale---do you ever post on craigslist? Today someone was posting on CL out in glendale, but I don't want to go out to some random person's house....especially if they aren't cool enough to be BYC.

I would rather come see you...when the DH is outta town and I can sneak a few "rescues" in.

I don't know if I'm the other Glendale poster you're referring to, but I did post an ad yesterday for some 8 week old pullets & cockerels. My two barnevelder hens went broody on us, so we purchased some eggs for them to set on (new & fun experience for us) and also purchased extra chicks from the feedstore to keep the first chick company (my first hen broke all our eggs and I brought the last one inside where it hatched six hours later).

I treat my birds well. I bought all my chickens as babies. My hens have only had one health problem in the 9 months I've had them and it was due to injury not illness - bumblefoot (not contagious). SpeckledHens's chickens get bumblefoot a lot due to her rocky & thorny yard - At first I thought my hens had hurt their feet on the rocks in our yard, but then I discovered that a bush/tree was shedding stickers (after I got one in my foot). We cut the entire thing down - took 3 days. We now have 3 of our hens recuperating from treatment and with bandages on their feet.

None of my babies have any foot problems - they are too young. FYI: to check a chicken for bumblefoot - take a look at the bottoms of their feet - a dark scab on the pad of their foot signals bumblefoot -no scab, no bumblefoot.

AZDesertChicks-

You count as people too! I wasn't saying anything bad about anyone in particular...just the general creepiness when you are using the unknown and craigslist.

When I say, "random person's house" it comes from a place of wariness and distrust developed by personal experience.

Indeed it had nothing to do with chickens or quality of birds or anything BYC...but an incident relating to a step 2 child's playhouse, a scary/smelly toothless old meth head with carney hands, and my rear end. Ya ken?

I apologize in advance to the scary, smelly, toothless old methheads with carney hands.

I also apoligize to all carnies.

Also-ArizonaDesertChicks...you obviously ARE cool enough to be with the BYC!

By they way....I made my husband copy your coop and follow your suggestions for a desert coop. He was going to over-engineer this odd chicken castle/fortress thing with mag locks and all sorts of crazy stuff. It was making him crazy! I showed him your coop pic and he said, "oh, well that makes sense. Why didn't you just say you wanted that?" Story of my life.

Thanks - for saying I'm cool too. I didn't take offense at all in your other post (I knew you didn't know who posted the ad - and who knows, there could be a third Glendale poster besides Nessa & I). I just added the extra info about bumblefoot because my craigslist ad did say my chickens are healthy and I wanted to clarify it for those who know my beloved hens got bumblefoot (I had posted on here looking for help). I was so distressed about it, I almost gave up on keeping chickens, but I got new wind and am trying to cure my originals while trying to prevent the new chicks I keep from getting it too.

I'd love to see a picture of your coop.
