Awe, so cute!! Thanks for sharing How long after hatch before you know gender?

I let my girls hatch these days, no time or space for hatching; once I had a broody hatch I was hooked on that option lol. So much less work! Also, I’m doing more broody breaking than anything, I don’t need or want chicks right now.

Tis the season for broodies! I have three girls all trying to brood in one flock.
Sexing peas depends on the color. My white and Java can take a year max. Have to wait on the tail feathers to be 100% accurate. The other colors you can tell by two months max. But all are sexed by differences in markings.

Hi there! I am totally new here, and glad to have found this group. We got baby chicks just about 3 weeks ago, and through a DNA test we've confirmed that 3 (out of 3) of the Silkies we received are roosters. Embarrassingly, we did not realize this breed was "straight run" when we got these chicks we were under the impression they had all been sexed as pullets...! Since we live in the city, roosters are prohibited, and we are in search of a new home for the little guys. I so wish we could keep them because they are sweet and beautiful little guys. Please PM me if you are interested, or have tips to share for rehoming in the AZ area.

Hello! Sorry you got those like that. I hope that you can find someone that is working with those or at least bantam's that want a rooster. Silkie's are very hard to sex when they are that young, as most breed's are.

I have a broody hen in a breaker crate. This will be her second night. She's desperately trying to get out of the cage (unlike earlier). She's jumping up, even squawking occasionally. Never seen her do this. I feel bad for her. Don't know if she's desperate for the nestbox or if she wants to roost with the others.
Should I leave her be or let her out & see what she does?

It sound's like she's pretty broody right now. She's acting like that because she want's to get back to the nest box.

Once they get to a certain phase of the broodiness, you either have to break them or give them some fertile eggs to sit on. Some that are heavily into being broody can sit for month's and waste away.

Edit: If you decide to give her some egg's, give her some from your Bielefelder's. At least you will be able to tell the sex of them when they hatch.

If I ever do decide to hatch any of our own eggs, it would definitely be the Biele eggs.
