Arizona Chickens

Well everyone is right. That rooster crowed. Not just a little. He let loose 5 crows in a row. I looked outside. His neck stretched up, his wings raised and he had a great time.... now I have a problem but was fun to watch.

I do have a friend out farther that will take the flock of three but I think I will wait till someone complains before I give them up....They have been enjoyable.

Hello fellow Arizona chicken lovers! New here on BYC, and very pleased to have found the desert dwellers section Great to see so many local folks, anyone else "under the radar" in keeping their chickens? Two years ago, I lived in QC on an acre property, where I had many chickens and not a care in the world on who knew/who saw them etc etc. Now, living in the big city-o-Phoenix, I read all the laws regarding the 80 foot rule, made sure the 3 new hens (and pheasants were 80 feet and THEN I figure out that HOA's override City laws? Yikes. Who knew Oh well, the pheasants are generally quiet and I'll just have to inform the girls to keep their cluckin to a minimum Or I'll have to find the rules and regulations of the HOA, what fun!

Welcome Enjaytoo! When we moved back to mesa 2 years ago from an acre that we owned in Eloy, I thought we had to keep the chickens under the radar, too. Now that we have moved back onto property, I find out that you can have up to 10 chickens including a rooster in Mesa! That whole time I thought I was being sneaky! Well, our Nigerian Dwarf wasn't supposed to be there, but we passed her off as a "dog"! HeHe.... Just try to bribe your neighbors with eggs and you should be fine!

Hi!!! I am new to the board also. I have three girls currently and am planning on adding a couple more. I am trying to be under the radar, but I checked out our HOA says no livestock, then I researched zoning laws for AZ- hehe- live stock isn't chickens so the HOA can lay an egg!!! lol

I am sure they will try and call chickens livestock for their purposes if they found out though!! Good thing I have tolerant neighbors!

You hit the nail on the head! I know for a fact that the term "livestock" in the state of Arizona does not include poultry. I had a dog attack and kill some of my first chickens a few years ago. I called animal control and the officer told me that you can kill a dog for attacking livestock, but unfortunatly poultry do not fall under the definition of livestock. That's how I found out. Well, my son just called to let me know that one of the eggs he put into the incubator hatched. It was like 117 degrees the day those eggs were laid, so I sort of thought they were not good.

Let's see how many more hatch out. They are from barred rock hens crossed with a Rhode Island Red rooster. Some were white eggs from a Brown Leghorn. That should make a real pretty chicken.

He says he wants to keep them at his house in the air conditioning, but I don't think his wife will put up with that. I will fix a coop for them here.

I checked the fines to see what would happen if I get a complaint. first is a warning then they will hit me with $250.. I put him in the garage after dark to keep him quiet till 7 am when noise is allowed. Will see? have a friend who will take them till I move out to an acre, just hate to break them up as they are a fun little family...

plan to go to an acre... still looking for the right place. hope it happens in the next few months.

Some of my fondest memories are of my house in CG; thats where I got my very first chickens...lived right off Hwy 8... Ahh, the coop building, the brooding, the joy of the first egg....hehehe, I cant wait to do it all over again (but on a much smaller scale of course)
No news on the HOA, BF is going to call tomorrow and see if he can find out any info...it should really be fine, I'm just worried someone will say something about my "girls"..

The frizzle hen I just got has 3 chicks by her side, not sure if any are boys but I'm sure with my luck I'll be in the the same "hiding roosters in the garage at night" mode as you eventually!

Well, I went to the city yesterday, drove to the feed store, first thing. Wow!

they had the compressed bales of pine. They had two different sizes of the shred ( Is that what you call it?) I not only was able to get a bale of it and a 50 lb bag of dog food in the trunk, the Honda still had room. The feed store is D&D on Jackrabbit trail S of I-10. I also went next door to the irrigation store, to get more mist system nozzles. ($1.99 each ).

good news is, if you unscrew the hose when you turn it off and let it drain, unscrew one nozzle let it drain, screw back in. the junk does not build up inside that way. It is worth a try. Every time I turned it off and it set a day, it would not work. I would have to soak it in vinegar. I had a hard time finding replacements. Walmart used to carry them. Point being, if you are having the same problem, check irrigation stores. Makes a difference if you have plastic or medal tube.
DM, I wish you good luck with your chicks. Could you not build up against your house or yard an Aviary type coop/cage? I had friends that lived in Mesa, who did just that. They had a cabin in Forest Lakes an built one up there. they brought the chickens with them and their pond fish. I saw both places. Worth a WOW! She told the complainers they were her pets, no different than Love Birds, Parrots and what have you.
