ArizonaDesertChicks... No, the incubator didn't fail... I'm not sure if it was the eggs or just the breed themselves being difficult.

Since this is my second batch that has failed, I'm thinking it may be shipping + Welsummers don't mix. So, to answer your question... Yes, they were shipped eggs. I think I'm going to order pullets in Spring and just call it a day. I don't think shipping these eggs are going to work out at all... Sigh.......

I think I would like 2 more Buff Orpingtons. I like their temperaments, relaxed and move easy..or maybe that is just what mine is like. The other one I have is brown and looks smaller...Got them from the feed store when chicks. Went to the feed store looking. All they had were roos. Want 2 that are from the same flock though around same age as mine are 5 months. Any one know where I should go? those chicks were so cute....I guess it would be a gamble to think one of mine would mother them. don't know enough about chickens besides I do want older ones than chicks.

I got a BO from the feed store too. She is by far my "favorite". When the chicks were still inside, she would sit on my shoulder when I did chores & cleaned the kitchen. Since she is the oldest, if only by a few weeks, she kinda emerged as the flock mistress. My mutts were really leery of me until they realized Nuggett was getting mad treats and lovies whenever I came in.

You BO may not "mother" them, but maybe "big sister" them?

Our chicks arrived from the P.O. today. It's my first time ordering chicks through the mail (ordered through MPC). We ordered 25 and received 25 (all EEs). Most of them are healthy and running around eating, drinking, pecking each other, etc., but I'm afraid that 2 of them aren't going to make it.

One chick has a leg that sticks out to the side and the other chicks keep pecking at its leg. It can't walk on the leg, so I can't imagine trying to baby it till it grows up - it still won't be able to walk.

The other doesn't do anything but sleep - it doesn't even want to open its eyes after being here an hour. I made sure to stick each and every chick's beak into the water so that they would know how to drink. I have given this chick several drinks of water since it's come home, but it hasn't even walked at all.

In the past, I've picked up all my chicks from the feed store and they have all been healthy - I've never had to cull a chick before. I'm figuring I'll just wait on the wait that is sleeping (just in case), but do we need to put down the chick with the sidewise leg?

what about a band-aid splint? If it works, then no big deal: no baby-ing required.

If it doesn't work, you can cull it in a day or two. I suppose you could toss some feed on the brooder floor, maybe to give them something other than his leg to peck at?

Yes, congrats on the new "kids".....I would give it a shot with fashioning a little splint...maybe incorporating some thicker mole skin and/or Vet wrap and isolating the little peep for a few days... The one that isnt moving much; sugar water and extra heat?

I felt the leg to see if it could be pushed back, but it seems to be deformed, not broken. The upper leg is kind of bowed and then the lower half sticks out that direction. The chick can pull it somewhat underneath itself while it scoots, but then the leg falls back again. The chick won't go to the food & water on its own. I held it next to the food dish and then it would eat, but basically, it spends most of its time sleeping- not like the other crazy chicks that run all over each other. I tried seperating it from the others by placing it in a tiny basket in the brooder and under the light, but it just tries to get out (wants to be with the others).

It's hard to tell from the pics, but the foot is upside down. The part you see is the underneath of the foot.

This is the whole bunch - I'm excited to see some new colors. All the EEs that we got from the feed shop seem to look the same once they're grown (out of 7, we have 2 different colors). They were all chipmunk colored -- but these are black, buff/red?, white, & of course the chipmunks.
