Arizona Chickens

Good Morning Arizona. Lots going on yesterday. All those cute babies. Waiting on the Cochin eggs. That is exciting and nerve racking. I do love the Cochin bird. I am looking for 2-4. pullets only. The color has not been set in stone.

:cd:cd.

I got a deal on CL, for a kids plastic playhouse. $50.00. I got a tip from one of our BYC members to look under kids. I did that, my first look and there it was. Within 10 min. The deal was done. I pick it up today. This will be the house for the Cochin girls I will get.

Are the Cochin slower layers? Every other day or something like that.

I should look that up.

Hope everyone has a great day and that today is the Egg day. You know there has been a full moon going on. Just a thought!

My cochins are 6mos old/ the boys just started paying attention to them a couple weeks ago and they just started laying eggs too early to tell about how regular they lay.and only 2 out of 6 are starting to lay. couple months and I will have some cochin eggs to hatch Mwahaha!!!

WELCOME!! It sounds like everyone is having fun with their pheasants/chickens

Last night, I moved the bantys out of the brooder & put them with the big kids. I kinda shoved them under the BO--- so cross your fingers! I am hoping on the "chickens can't count" idea for flock integration. I'll go out in a second and see how they are doing.

Congrats! I want to hatch some eggs, alas I have to wait one thing at a time. One of the reasons to get Cochin's is they go broody often. so the long wait is get the girls and hope one of them sets some eggs. I just love watching the Mother and baby together.
Today I get the kids playhouse to convert to a Cochin hen house. I have to drive across the valley to pick it up. I found it on CL, saw photo, price was right, and I can't wait to pick it up..Wish me luck.

Ohhh, yes, I'd love to hear how that "chickens cant count" idea worked...

And a Play house, how great! That sounds like a really fun renovation, I can see why you would be chomping at the bit! My little one has been helping me paint the shipping crate...hehehe, now thats been messy

Hello Arizonans!

I am interviewing for a position out there, and am wondering about chickens in the greater Phoenix area. Are you limited to a certain number? Hens only or can you have roos? How far out of the city would I need to go to get a small place where I could continue my breeding projects?

I will be working in the Tempe area, so I would either think Scottsdale and North/Northeast of there, or Gilbert/Chandler and South/Southeast of there.

Keeping the chickens definitely plays into the whole job question....

Thanks for any info you can give me!

Katie

Hi Katie. Good Luck with the job interview and hope to see you on this thread coming from Phoenix soon.
You can still find places in Phoenix where you can have livestock and fowl - legally.

I live in South Phoenix near the Legacy Golf Resort. We have 1 3/4 acres and are agriculturally zoned. We currently have 2 goats, 2 sheep, 5 red hens and 5 guinea fowl.
A neighbor to the west of us has a load of Pea Fowl and chickens, across the street she has hens and roosters and next door they have chickens, goats, horses, cows and bulls. There are horse properties all around us.
So, get a good realtor to show you the properties for sale or rent that allows animals.
Let us know how the interview goes and again good luck.

Whoooooo hooooooo!

I have a mainly bantam flock, but I need my roos, since both my son and I work on breeding projects! The thought of going roo-less and having only 4 chickens at this point seems horribly wrong, somehow. LOL!

I'll let you know if I get the position!

Katie, You can look up on the net, the laws about different areas Like Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert Chandler as well as phx. Mesa was in a city fight. Not sure how that is going.

You can put out a call on BYC Forum, and somebody will know the law for that area. There is still lots of property that you can have some poultry. Would depend on drive time, miles, that you would need to drive for your work.

to get some millie cochin eggs from you!!!!! HeHe.... Hey, I'm an only child and I can't help it if I'm a little selfish!

I'm down in Casa Grande and we have 2.5 acres and 2 houses that we bought for $61,900! We are about 1/2 hours to the southern part of Tempe and about 40 min to the northern part. So depending on how far you are willing to travel you can get a GREAT deal on property. Best of luck and if you need a good realtor, let me know (I know several!).

On a different note... I'm getting a little frustrated with the Quail. I've been loosing about 3-4 a day! Everytime I go in there one is laying on it's side with it's eyes closed ready to give up the ghost (if you know what I mean). Grrrr!!! Not that I have lost a ton, but I really don't want to loose any!

Enjaytoo... All my good egg vibes are heading your way!!! I hope you get some soon!!!!

Larissa... How is the integration working out?
