Arizona Chickens

We were lucky to have a school incubator hatch 16 out of 17 eggs. VERY CUTE. The rooster is a Pekin Bantam and the contributing hens a Leghorn and and Araucana. So, being new to babies (I have 6 laying hens currently), when it is safe to put them outside to learn to scratch for a bit? How long do they eat the chick starter and what are some other good food intro's and when? I feel like I did with my first human son

I am in Tucson - if the weather is at all a factor. Chicken tractor in the day?

As for the LDS...
Im one and my husband went to Uraguey (sp) on his mission. I almost went on a mission as well, got my call to Washington DC but had met my husband in the mean time and ended up getting married instead

Hi Kirsten,

Checked out your blog via your website link. Good looking sons you have there. Ok, I'll start on the baby chicken stuff, but I am NOT the priemier expert so I am sure others will pitch in. They can go outside without a light permanently when they are "fully feathered". I have yet to see a good explanation of how to recognize "fully feathered" , but I get the impression that about 4 weeks is when folks start looking at moving them outside. I was told to give start and grow until the were ready to lay eggs, but have seen altering opinions on this one. IMHO they can go in a good secure chicken tractor in the day if they are warm enough. Do you have them in a box with a light over them so they can get warm if needed? They like it warm for the first few weeks. (Someone will tell you how warm, I forget.) I use the - if they congregate under the light they are too cold and if they congregate far, far from the light they are too hot method on where to put the light. Drowning can be a problem. Water needs to be in a shallow dish with rocks. Oh, and if they get pasty butt, clean right away.

Sock! They are wonderful, ya know if you tried to sell those on BYC you would never stop getting orders. The one on the left is wonderful, what color are you going with? Don't answer if you can't haha! I would go with maybe... white crested blue, golden laced (wow hard!) or maybe buff laced. The laced ones are gong to be hard however the white crested blue would be simpler but still elegant.

What are they made of? I have tried to sculpt in the past but the sculpting clay is always kid grade of something haha. Do you have a specific method to making them?

Sorry, I know this is a chicken thread. Still, reading some of the member replies makes me happy because I like to know others dedications. Thanks for speaking up and giving all the info! :B

Laree, the wiki link was pretty accurate, I would have edited only a few paragraphs. ... and gee, I always just assumed you were LDS too. You still could be... my brother attends at the building by 36th and Shea... and there is another building up by T-bird, probably closer to you.

RRR- Latter-day Saints feel a kinship to those of the Jewish faith, but that would take some face-to-face explaining, more than I could do on a message board. I got to know Rabbi Plotkin before his death and whenever he would see me he would say, "Ah, my Latter-day Saint - Mormon cousin". We always laughed.

Beyond everything you may have heard or seen of LDS, more than anything, it is a way of life.
It is correct that we don't drink alcohol, use tobacco in any form and we try to live a healthy lifestyle. It is a great advantage in my opinion for kids and youth as we have the Primary organization and the Young Men's and Young Women's programs. The Church has embraced the scouting program and so far I have two of my boys who have earned their Eagle Award. #3 & #4 are getting close also. It helps to keep them out of trouble, teaches great moral values and I believe helps them to excel in their school work. Our Church has always emphasized the importance of education.

I come from a family of seven children and each one of us have advanced degrees beyond four years of undergrad university work. I hope my own children will follow suit and will make decisions that will lead to happiness.

OK, so more than you probably wanted to know, but you said you were interested.

I'll be on my way to Mesa this evening for the 'viewing'/ get together of my Aunt's family after her passing at Bunker mortuary. She was 92 and had 89 great grandchildren with 2 on the way.
I have lots of relatives here in the valley. They raised all of their kids just two miles of south of where I live, just south of McDowell on 35th Street.

Mahonri- I get that often. If you have ever been around me when I stub my toe, you would know I wasn't. Like a creative sailor with Tourette's. But I did attend church with most of my friends. Wednesdays, Sundays, occasional Tuesday night "teen nights" (lots of ice blocking), stake dances, retreats.... I could be getting days mixed up. I grew up with the Snephfs, Browns, Allreds, Kirtchners, even the Ange kids--but they were rebels and out of our social league
