Arizona Chickens

Hi all, well I still have 75 eggs, `A total of 20 out of the 95 eggs have been removed.

28 eggs from Peachick (Kathy) at first candle 24 eggs remain. (these were all in the hovabator... so I still have 85% of hers... not bad at all!

34 eggs from Wayne Meredith at first candle 29 eggs remain. not bad for shipped eggs 85% remain.

18 eggs from pasofinofarm (Melissa) at first candle 11 eggs remain. 5 clear and two quitters that were most likely scrambled. 61% but to be fair she warned me about a fertility issue with one of the hens, and I don't know why, but I've always felt the P.O. there treats them a tad rougher than most.

My eggs
1 GC Maran (should be pure) 1 egg still there but it's iffy
3 BWA X BBL Polish (Policauna.. ) 3 still there but 2 are iffy
3 BWA X Salmon Faverolle 1 egg remains. Her back is the barest and two were clear ????????
1 BWA X Black Star . 1 egg, Still there!
7 BWA X W/BWA from my coop. 5 eggs remain.2 were quitters both of these in the IncuCubebator. Also in there, one of mine with a crack above the air cell remains!

95 eggs total ---- 75 total eggs at first candle 4 of 12 removed from IncuCubator, 3 of those remain IFFY

I'm thinking that they should be further along. The eggs in the Brinsea (all Wayne's eggs) seemed to be further along than the hovabator, so I imagine they will hatch first. Their air cells were much more uniform as the Brinsea keeps it at a constant 35% humidity.

Mahonri- How old were the other Ameraucanas from your last hatch when their muffs and beards came in? The little guy I got from you is still clean faced, but since I've not had a pure-bred bird before, I don't know if its normal or not. Otherwise, his feathers are coming in really well, and he's starting to be a real looker, as well as being really nice to the girls.

Kat, most should have beards and muffs by now. I did have one clean faced bird that I gave to Laree. One of her new lap chickens.

I really thought your's had muffs and a beard!!!

Tell you what, when my next hatch gets to 6 weeks old, I'll find a real good looking wheaten with muffs and beard and give it to you free.

Mahonri! - Nice! Sounds like things are going pretty well!

DD and I went to the Stock Shop tonight. I am always impressed with how clean that place is. They have polish babies!!!!!

So hard to resist! I wish they had gotten them in next week. I would get some and give them to the broody with all the other chicks. She would never know the difference. But they are already 4 days old. Darn.
Picked up some vegies for the garden there, too. Jalepeno peppers, artichoke and cabbage! Great additions to our growing garden!

Came home with chicken feed tonight and found the broody moved! It should be lock down, so I was thinking that DH moved her while he was working on her expansion. I was all prepped to get mad! But he swears he didn't move her. She is all out in the middle of the 2x2 space now. She must have gotten tired of being crammed in the corner and decided to get comfortable. Hopefully she won't get up again. It is lock down!! How do I tell her that?

I guess I just trust her. She has all the best eggs!!

RRR - Thanks, but I am done for now with incubating eggs. I am going to let my broody do this from now on. If she is going to go broody every year, then what is the point of me banging my head against the wall?

Oh, don't worry about it! Jayne is a sweet little guy, and it isn't like I'm gong to show him. If he turns out to be mean I might take you up on the offer, but so far I think he'll make a good flock husband, and no matter what, he'll make some pretty EE's. For that matter, only one of my EE's is clean faced, so I could still get muffed and bearded chicks.

It can get addicting, but I won't be hatching again after this until I set eggs in December for the 2nd Annual New Year's Day Hatch... and I'll only be setting the bluest of my blue eggs and hopefully only from blue wheatens or splash wheatens AND probably no more than 24.... stay tuned. and of course I'll set again around good Friday next year with best and bluest of eggs again.

Mahonri - since a few of us have chickens hatched from your W/BWAs, could you give us just a brief primer about their genetics?

Your rooster is a Blue Wheaten Am and your have Wheaten hens. Do you also have Blue Wheaten hens? What are the possibilities in the offspring? How do you get a splash?

I am going to get a pic of my roo and see if you can tell me what it will look like. He looks like he will be pretty, but i can't tell if it will be blue, wheaten or splash! What do I know?

Thanks!

WOW I wish i had had an incubator to try some of your eggs. Looks like it will be a really cool group of chicks. Too bad there will only be one Salwheatenacauna

I would love to try one of those.

I wish you good luck with the eggs and hope you are over run with baby chicks (so i can maybe grab a few from you

)

As a dumb question how do you get away with the rooster ? Is he not that loud? do you bribe the neighbors? You must let me know.

Thanks

Shaun

Thanks for doing that. Its a nice setup. I love the auto water container. I will have to find one of those. I can see that is really worth its weight in gold!!
