Hi....

You must live closer to me....Olsen's grain is an ok place to get chickens..like most feed stores they order them in from an out of state hatchery....

Or if you are interested...I live in Chino Valley (North of Prescott) and have a nice hatchery going here. I currently have 7 kinds of chickens that I hatch out all the time....the only kind on your list that I don't have is Black Stars. All of my chicks are pure breeds. Black Stars are a production bird that is a combination of two kinds of birds...they make these combos for really good egg laying. I have just as good luck with the pure breeds for amount of eggs. My barred rocks lay 6 eggs per bird per week for example. You can't ask fr better than that.

If you would like to message me,I can help you with questions for Northern AZ

Not really, but I keep trying. Just want to minimize the damage until it gets too hot for the aphids. On a year like this, my cascalote trees will loose every leaf due to bugs. I don't know what to do for them. They are so beautiful, but are really sensitive and seem to always have a reason to look terrible all summer.

In the garden, there are so many bugs on the tomatoes. I was hoping to feed some ladybugs...

I was inspired by Laree's photo album of her garden. I went all over my yard taking pics yesterday. Fun! I love the desert in bloom!! But my allergies!! Ugh!

Hey guys looking to find out what you would pay for this little coop. I am not trying to sell it here. He still has to trim the roof metal and fasten it down but other than that it is done. It has 3 standard size nesting boxes with a egg door on the back and a roosting bar on the opposite side. The size is roughly 4ft X 3ft X 5.5 ft. It is made completely out of solid wood with screws not staples or nails. It contains no particle board or press board. Completely trimmed all the way around so no wire edges to snag clothes on. It has chicken wire but that is because it originally was being built for someone that could only spend a certain amount of money. The wire is super tight.

All I have for pictures is hubby's phone so it's like shooting pics in the dark but there is a roosting bar on the opposite side from the nesting boxes. It is a 2x2 with smoothed edges. I can barely see the bar in the first picture but I know where to look. The roosting bar is slightly higher up than the boxes on the opposite side.

Question for fellow Arizonians... When dealing with small chicks, the temperature should decrease by 5 degrees on a weekly basis starting at about 95 degrees. But iff the brooder is outside (in the shade), taking the temperature down to 75 by week 5 isn't going to happen. Does this mean that outdoor brooding is not a good idea? Do they need to be in an air conditioned environment so that the temperature can be better monitored? What is your experience?

All my chick brooders are outside all the time. That temp is what they need at LEAST. If it is at or above the temp you need them all should be fine. Look at the chicks if they are running around and happy then your doing good. If they are all clumped up in the corner then they are cold and if they are laying flat and panting then they are too hot.

Thanks, Gretchen. I just sent you a message.

AZ Heat,
Inside brooder are best due to control, outside it is very hard to monitor unless you have a mostly closed off enclosure with a thermostat running the heaters.

Gckiddhouse,
I remember when I was younger and visited my Aunts house in New Jersey. Her house is a very clean white and it stands tall with pillars.
During the fall season her house is a striking contrast to the red and orange ground and the ladybugs that flutter all over exterior of the house make it seem like it's swaying with the leaves on the ground.

Oops, sorry memory land haha. Anyways, when I had several rescue reptile I had to buy insects online and I ended up finding out they ship very well and you end up with breeding insects so they keep going all year long. Here is just one of the many places...http://www.growquest.com/free_ladybugs.htm .
