My mother just called. The babies hatched!

She can't count them because they are moving around so much, but there are babies everywhere! Yippee!!!!

The eggs were given to the broody on Friday April 30th. Some at 8 a.m and some at 10 a.m. (It took that long to decide to give her all 18 eggs. Remember, her name is Jumbo for a reason...she is big. She covered them all.) So, I guess 20.5 days!

We gave her 18 eggs. One egg broke half way through. I suspect she kicked it out because it wasn't developing. (Monhonri told me one egg was from a hen that the rooster didn't seem to notice, so it could have been that one.) So 17 eggs.

My sister had reported a smallish to medium sized standard hen hatching 12 eggs. So we figured, why not and gave her all the eggs. She is pretty big. I never touched them after we gave them to her, so no candling. Jumbo has been very diligent. We had to mover her last week because she was up in the air in a small next box. I didn't want babies falling 2 feet once hatched. We moved the whole 4 hole nest box with her and the eggs in it. I was worried she would get up for her daily potty break and get lost, but she never did. I have kept thinking "don't count your chickens before they hatch". So I am pretty excited to know at least some have hatched...enough that Mom can't count them while they are running around!

I don't know what will happen next, but for now we celebrate!

I got Laree's eggs today, thanks to Cheerful and her Dad! They are beautiful!

5 of the 7 eggs are snug under the broody silkie. I took her golf balls away and set the eggs next to her. She tucked them under her as soon as she saw them

I'm debating if I should give her the other 2 or not... I feel guilty not giving them to her, but at the same time I'm not sure if they will all fit under her.

This will be my first hatch

Laree - I love the pictures! Your son is adorable, and I love Cinnabon!
Cheerful - Congrats on the big hatch! 18 eggs under one hen?

Mahroni - I'm jealous of the vacation! We are going to try camping up there with our 2 year old this summer.

Laree, I think your right about Salt being Salty Roo. Still pretty!
When I see your son in that water bowl I feel like he should be shouting "I AM THE BATMAN".

The rabbit is growing alright but she's still pretty runty for a meat one. Her nose has been a little snotty so I hope it's because she's been rubbing it on the carpet.
If you remember I posted a picture of her on a shoe box, she wasn't even a forth of it. Well she doubled in size and now throws the shoe box around.

Laree: that story is one of my favorite bits of weird Arizona history, its so cool that you actually have the bomb! And yes, my chicken's poop is very, very valuable

Cheerful: Congrats on the chicks and on the broody.

Good morning everyone! I am gone for a few days and wow 10+ pages I have missed. Hope everyone is doing well so far today.

Kids are out of school and this is our first day of having nothing to do.

Good Morning Everyone. . . .I am still having to "unsubscribe" then "resubscribe" daily in order to keep getting new post notices. . . .anyone else experiencing this?

Autumn, my young blue Ameracauna Hen has definatly gone broody, and is in the process of attempting to hatch 3 wooden eggs. . . .suggestions? cures? Jokes? I wouldn't mind putting a fertile egg under her, but can't risk a roo. . . ."what to do. . . what to do". . .

If you don't want a roo then put some duck eggs under her. Everyone should have some ducks in there yard.

Take away all of the eggs from under her and if you have other hens keep taking the eggs so she can't put then under herself. Keep moving her off of the nest. I have heard of people putting ice cubes under there broodies. Not sure if that works but you could try.
