Arizona Chickens

I guess I'm asking too much for my beautiful roo.

One person e-mailed, then asked me to watch a video first... when I tried to watch it, it said it would be harmful to my computer.

The one fellow said he wanted it and then bought the easter egger instead.

He is too pretty to eat. If he didn't have that stupid floppy pea comb, I'd use him for breeding.

Saw the chiropractor today. ...wish I could go right to bed after seeing him.

I have a headache that won't go away. Tylenol doesn't touch it.

The only thing that helps is a dark room and no noise.... and deep breathing. weird.

Sock- I just keep throwing her out of the nest box and she'll stay out for a while. I guess I should try a wire cage, only problem is they don't get free run of the yard all day because of the dogs and if she is loose in the run she has access to the nest box so she might just have to stay in the cage most of the day.

Mahonri- I wish I could take him right now because he sure is pretty and know you have good fertility in you flock. If this house deal goes through I'll be checking to see what you have for roos for sure.

Since the kids are going to be doing 4h we're going to try avoiding cutting. We have experimented with increasing their vision and it looks like the may get a pony tail or taped with hair tape.

Where I grew up in Utah, morning glory is a weed. You can't keep it out of orchards or off ditch banks there. Wonder if it's the same thing here.

Good morning everyone! Sorry for being so absent. We have been so busy preparing for our trip to Liberia and it's finally time!! We leave in 26 hours

I think it all depends on your elevation and climate. I have tried to grow morning glory for the last 2 years since I have a fence that I love for it to take over. Mine grows wonderful in the early spring but by summer down here it just fries it. My aunt lives only 15 minutes away and about a 1500 feet elevation above me and hers does great all summer and even in winter.

You might just have to bunny proof all around the vine until it gets strong enough to handle to bunnies chewing on it. My mother has a real problem with rabbits and goffers in her yard and everything that she wants to live she has to put chicken wire around the roots and about 3 feet up above ground. Once the plants are big enough to fill in this chaged area then they are strong enough to handle some nibbles.

I have some updates of my chickens and ducks.

My broody GLW is still doing great as a mamma the chicks are now around 3-4 weeks old. They are still sleeping under her on the ground but I think in no time they will be up on the roosts. I think my SLC is a little roo.

That is the only one that I was REALLY hoping was a female. Oh well hopefully I am wrong.

I need to get updated pics. All of the other hens are doing really good with the chicks still.

On a sad note, we got new neighbors in and they have a dog that has never been around birds. Yesterday I was out taking care of the birds and my brother saw the neighbors dog chewing on my scovie!

She was chewing on my chocolate one. I was so sad. I called the lady that i got them from and she still had 7 ducklings left. After my hubby got off of work we drove to get one more scovie to have with this last one. We ended up leaving with 2

. I am hoping that these two are going to be females since the last two I got I think are both males. I had a descussion with the neighbors and they were very sorry. I told them I didn't want any money for the scovie I just wanted up to figure out a way that this wouldn't happen again. We walked all around out fence and there was a part in the chain link that there dog had pushed it's head in and gotten a hold of the duckling. We fixed that hoping this won't happen again. We haven't had neighbors in that house for about 10 years now so we just never noticed the problem with the fence plus our vines cover it. So I guess it was kind of an out of sight out of mind kind of thing. Our ducks and chicks grow up around our dogs so they don't know that dogs are bad. Everything is ok though, I have 2 ducks to replace the one lost and my neighbor is a very nice lady.

Shock.... in Utah morning glory is a pernicious weed that is also known as "bind weed". Very dreadful. ...and you want some of it...

That said, I think my dad has some growing in his yard. I could ask him about starts if you want.

good luck with the house stuff.

newchickmom09 - Glad it worked out. That had to be hard at first though. I hope the fence is secure now.

NoSkiveez - I think I missed something...morning glory, vision, hair tape...

Used to be that Morning Glory was an illegal weed in Arizona. It would grow on top of the cotton and bind up the picking machine. Also, some people used it as an intoxicant.

It used grow atop the jungle in Mexico and it was so pretty.

I live in a cotton field and it still grows like that. It bas killed a few citrus trees in a very short time. It wraps around branches and the whole branch dies. It also spreads across the tops of the trees like moss. Some was so thick rooted my husband had to remove it with a chain saw. Its nearly killed everything on our property when our house was empty. We had no clue what it was and took it to home depot and they didn't know so we took it to a nursery and they told us what it was.
