I also have a varied egg basket (finally) but would LOVE some super dark eggs, like Penedesenca's ... my Marans gives me medium brown, no complaints, but it's not chocolate!

I think my silkie is starting to go broody so maybe maybe MAYBE I can convince the hubby to let me stick some eggs under her, now that he's given up on the ducks (decided cleaning out a kiddie pool was too much work).

I figure it'll be easier to get eggs than chicks ...

NoSkiveez, I'm sorry about your chick. I do know, and hate the feeling.

I can definately identify with the 'addictiveness' of having chickens. Maybe instead of "Arizona Chickens" this shoud be "Arizona Chickens Anonymous"

I'm still waiting for green or blue eggs from my flock. Just for fun I put some big white eggs (probably Silver White Leghorns) under a broody naked neck. Never tried letting a hen hatch eggs, it should be interesting.

My duck eggs are finally starting to hatch. One came out yesterday, has racing stripes on his feet and bill, the second one pipped, got his beak out, and I think has expired.

Won't know about the others for a few more days, I put them in as they were layed.

That darn owl is PERSISTANT! It keeps coming over and tries to get my younguns off the patio. It hangs around on the roof, the swingset, the patio roof, the tractor, the fence. Anyone know how to deter an owl? I don't have cats or dogs, and they are protected so I can't do too much.

Thanks for the info. I checked eBay and didn't find any but I did find some lovely Cochins that my daughter is wanting! lol

Thank you! I sent him an email so I'll wait to hear from him. I don't mind drivng to Phoenix. It is a 3 hour trek, but it's a trek to go anywhere!

Owls and hawks like to sit on fence posts and other perches. We used to put old cans on the ends of the fence posts to keep them from rotting out. A side benefit was that birds did not perch on them. Try that.

Rufus, I'd try it but the owls perch all over the roof, the neighbors roof, the telephone poles out front, my antenna, all along the fence, tractor, and chicken coop. They aren't too picky about where they watch from.

I sent my e-mail to our friend from south of Tucson.

Here's what's been laid in the past three days.

Blues are my Wheaten/Blue Wheaten, white is a polish... probably not fertile.
Then there are the FCBMs and a regular dark brown egg for comparison.

The two on the far left are FCBM X GCMarans.
